Enrolled Agent jobs in India have become a practical career option for commerce graduates and accounting professionals interested in US taxation. As global accounting firms expand their US tax teams in India, qualified candidates can find opportunities in tax preparation, return review, compliance, and client support.
The Enrolled Agent qualification offers a relatively quick route into this specialised field. However, the career also comes with practical considerations, including US shifts, demanding tax seasons, and the need to build strong technical experience before moving into senior roles.
This guide explains what the job involves, who hires, what an enrolled agent salary in India looks like at each stage, and where the career can lead after five years. If you are still deciding whether the credential itself is right for you, our Enrolled Agent course guide covers the syllabus and eligibility separately.
America is short of accountants. Enrolment in US accounting degrees has fallen for years, a large part of the CPA workforce is retiring, and the volume of filings has not fallen with it. US firms responded by moving preparation and first-level review to India, and they have been doing it at scale since well before 2020.
The credential matters because of what it carries. An Enrolled Agent is licensed by the IRS and can represent taxpayers before it, without the state-by-state limits that apply to other practitioners. For an offshore team, that turns a preparer into someone who can hold a technical position and defend it. This is also why job posts specifically mention IRS Enrolled Agent jobs rather than a generic tax profile.
There is one honest caveat. Software has already absorbed most data entry, and simple return preparation will keep shrinking as a skill. The demand sits in review, complex returns, and client-facing work, which is where you should be aiming from year two.
In the first year, you prepare returns: individual filings on Form 1040, partnership returns on Form 1065 with the K-1 allocations that come with them, corporate returns on Forms 1120 and 1120-S, plus the state returns sitting under each one. You build workpapers, chase missing documents, and learn one of the big tax platforms, such as CCH Axcess, GoSystem, UltraTax, or Lacerte.
By the second or third year, most people move into review. You check someone else’s return, catch the depreciation schedule that was rolled forward incorrectly, and explain why. Senior roles add IRS notices, amended returns, penalty abatement requests, and planning conversations with the US engagement team.
Job titles vary more than students expect. The same work is advertised as US Tax Associate, Tax Analyst, Tax Preparer, or Tax Senior. At Deloitte, entry-level tax consultant jobs in the US practice carry the title Tax Consultant. Search for the work described, not just the label.
The Big 4 global capability centres are the largest single employer group, with US tax teams at Deloitte USI, EY GDS, PwC, and KPMG spread across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Kolkata, Chennai, Coimbatore, Kochi, Pune, and Ahmedabad. Mid-tier American firms, including RSM, BDO, Grant Thornton, Citrin Cooperman, and EisnerAmper, run their own Indian delivery centres, while dedicated US tax outsourcing companies hire steadily through the year.
Two smaller pools are worth knowing about. Indian CA firms with US clients hire EAs directly, and a growing number of US practices contract Indian professionals remotely for busy-season support. For students in Kerala, Kochi is the realistic starting point, though the deepest pool of jobs for enrolled agents in India is still in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Be prepared to relocate for your first role.
Treat these as market bands, not promises. Pay depends on your city, employer, degree, English communication skills, and whether you already have accounting experience.

A graduate with no work experience enters near the bottom of the first band. A CA Inter candidate or someone with two years in Indian accounting starts closer to the top of it. The steepest jump does not come at entry. It comes when you can review and sign off work, which takes three to four years of real US tax exposure.
Be careful with the enrolled agent jobs salary figures floating around on aggregator sites. The averages there mix Big 4 managers with first-year preparers, which is how a ₹9 lakh average appears for a role many freshers join at ₹4.5 lakh.
Start with the shift. Most US taxation jobs run roughly from 2 pm to 11 pm IST, and some finish later. Your evenings may belong to work for years, which is manageable at 23 and harder at 33 with a family.
Then comes the season. January to mid-April is filing season for individual returns, with extension deadlines again in September and October. Ten- to twelve-hour days are normal during those weeks, and leave is usually blocked. Ask about this in the interview rather than discovering it in February.
The first year is repetitive. Students who expect advisory work from month one get restless by month four and leave for a domestic role at similar pay, which wastes the credential. Those who do well treat those months as paid training in a tax code they will use for a decade.
There is no degree requirement to sit the exam. You need a Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS, and that is the entry gate. Employers still prefer a commerce degree, so most students take the EA course alongside B.Com or immediately after graduation.
It fits final-year commerce students, graduates who want to start earning within a year, working professionals in Indian accounting or accounts payable who want a specialist switch, and CA aspirants who have paused their attempts and want a qualification they can finish while deciding. It does not fit someone who wants Indian statutory audit and practice, which is CA territory, or someone who wants a broad accounting and audit profile, where CPA or ACCA makes more sense. If you are unsure which route matches your background, a short counselling call with a mentor at IIC Lakshya could save you a year of guessing.
The Special Enrollment Examination has three parts covering individuals, businesses, and representation, practices, and procedures. Each part has 100 multiple-choice questions and a testing time of 3.5 hours. Once you clear your first part, you get three years to clear the rest, and you must apply for enrolment using Form 23 within a year of passing the last one.
Two changes matter for anyone planning enrolled agent job opportunities around an exam date. PSI Services replaced Prometric as the testing vendor effective 1 March 2026, and the current test window opened on 1 July 2026. The fee is now $317 per part instead of $267. International candidates, including those testing from India, will take the exam through remote proctoring, with international testing scheduled to begin on 1 September 2026. Check the official IRS enrolled agent page before you book, because the transition is recent and dates have already moved once.
After enrolment, you complete 72 hours of continuing education across each three-year cycle, including at least two ethics hours a year. It is a modest commitment, but it is not optional.
Three paths open up, and they pay differently. The first is the firm ladder, from reviewer to assistant manager to manager, where pay follows the number of people and clients you carry. The second is specialisation in expatriate tax, state and local tax, partnership taxation, or private client work, which tends to pay better than general compliance at the same experience level. The third is independent practice, serving small US CPA firms during their busy season.
Many EAs later add the US CPA for broader accounting and reporting roles. That works best after two or three years of real tax experience, not immediately.
Enrolled Agent jobs are worth pursuing if US taxation genuinely interests you and the US shift fits your life for the next few years. The qualification is quick, the entry barrier is low, and the work is steady. What it is not is a shortcut to a high salary without the years in between, and any institute that tells you otherwise is selling something.

If you would rather talk it through with someone who has placed students in these roles, IIC Lakshya offers free career counselling sessions where mentors map the EA path against your degree, your budget, and the kind of work you actually want to do.
