EA Vs CA: Is an Enrolled Agent the Same as a CA?

Last Updated On -11 Aug 2026

Enrolled Agent and Chartered Accountant qualifications compared for Indian commerce students

Enrolled Agent (EA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) are recognised professional qualifications in accounting and taxation. Since both professionals may handle tax-related work, students often wonder whether an Enrolled Agent is the same as a CA.

However, the two qualifications are awarded by different authorities and lead to different career paths. The EA credential is granted by the US Internal Revenue Service and focuses mainly on US taxation and taxpayer representation. The CA qualification is awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and covers broader areas such as auditing, accounting, taxation, financial reporting and corporate finance.

This article compares EA and CA based on eligibility, exam structure, course duration, fees, salary, job roles and professional rights. Understanding these differences will help you decide which qualification better suits your career goals.

The Short Answer, Before the Details

No, an Enrolled Agent is not the same as a CA. An EA is licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS. A practising CA is authorised to audit, certify and sign financial statements in India. Neither credential replaces the other, and neither is a lighter version of the other.

What an Enrolled Agent Actually Does?

The IRS Enrolled Agent credential is the highest credential the IRS awards, and it carries unlimited representation rights. An EA can act for any taxpayer, on any tax matter, before any IRS office, whether that involves an audit, a collections case or an appeal. US CPAs and attorneys hold the same right. Few other tax professionals do.

In India, that translates into US tax work delivered from here. Enrolled Agents prepare and review US individual and business returns, respond to IRS notices, and work on cross-border positions for American clients. Most of these roles sit inside Global Capability Centres, the US tax desks of large accounting firms, and tax outsourcing companies in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi and Gurugram.

One reality is worth knowing before you register: US tax season runs from late January to mid-April, with a second peak around the September and October extension deadlines. Those weeks can be long, and several teams work US hours. The licence also needs ongoing upkeep, with continuing education requirements to be completed through IRS-approved providers to keep it active.

What a Chartered Accountant Actually Does?

A CA’s mandate is far wider than tax. Statutory audit, tax audit, GST compliance, financial reporting under Ind AS, valuation, transaction support and CFO-track corporate finance all fall within it. Only a CA in practice can sign a statutory audit report for an Indian company, and that legal position is the reason the qualification holds the standing it does.

The training reflects that breadth. Two years of articleship puts students inside real audits and real assessments before they qualify, which is why so many CAs say their articleship firm shaped their career more than their marksheet did. Chartered Accountant jobs also spread across sectors in a way EA roles do not, from manufacturing and banking to independent practice serving local businesses.

Eligibility: Who Can Start Which Course?

The Enrolled Agent course has almost no academic entry barrier. CA has a structured pathway.

For EA, you need a Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS and a pass in the Special Enrollment Examination. You must then apply for enrolment and clear the IRS suitability check. There is no degree requirement, no commerce background requirement and no mandatory internship. That openness is exactly why working professionals, career switchers and graduates who already hold a job find this route workable.

CA moves through academic milestones. You may register for Foundation after Class 10 and sit the examination after appearing in Class 12. Graduates can enter directly at Intermediate through ICAI’s direct entry route, which currently requires 55% for commerce graduates and 60% for graduates from other streams. ICAI revises these conditions from time to time, so confirm the current criteria on the ICAI website before paying a registration fee.

Exam Structure: Three Parts vs Three Levels

The Enrolled Agent exam is a single examination split into three parts: Individuals; Businesses; and Representation, Practices and Procedures. Each part carries 100 multiple-choice questions in a 3.5-hour window, and you may attempt them in any order.

Testing generally runs from May to the end of February, with March and April blocked while the examination is updated for the new tax year. International candidates should check the current cycle before scheduling, as start dates can differ. After you clear your first part, a three-year carryover window applies to the remaining two, so plan your attempts with that deadline in mind. Details are updated on the official IRS Enrolled Agent page.

CA runs strictly in sequence, with descriptive answer papers, group-wise exemptions and self-paced online modules to be completed before Final. ICAI now holds Foundation and Intermediate examinations three times a year, which considerably shortens the gap between attempts compared with the old two-cycle pattern. Pass percentages at Final have historically remained in the low double digits. That is not an argument against CA. It is an argument for planning it honestly.

Enrolled Agent Salary vs Chartered Accountant Salary

Enrolled Agent salary in India commonly begins between ₹4 lakh and ₹8 lakh a year, depending on the city and whether you join a GCC, a Big 4 US tax desk or a smaller outsourcing firm. With three to five years of genuine US tax experience, ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh can become reachable. Reviewers who can handle complex partnership and corporate returns usually sit at the top of that band.

Chartered Accountant salary starts higher on average and climbs further. ICAI campus placement averages have hovered around ₹8 lakh to ₹9 lakh in recent years, though campus figures hide a wide spread. A handful of large offers lift the mean, while plenty of qualified CAs accept ₹6 lakh to ₹7 lakh outside campus. Partners in practice and senior corporate finance leaders can earn multiples of that a decade into their careers.

Treat both ranges as indicative. Your city, your employer’s client base, your articleship or internship record, and your interview performance move these numbers more than the credential alone does.

Three Mistakes We See at the Counselling Desk

  • Treating EA as CA-lite: It is not a shorter CA. An Enrolled Agent licence will not let you sign an Indian audit report, and no Indian regulator recognises it for statutory work. It is a US tax licence, complete on its own terms.
  • Choosing by duration instead of by work: Students clear all three parts within a year, join a US tax team, and then discover they do not enjoy return preparation. Read a few sample Form 1040 and Form 1120 workpapers before you commit twelve months to the subject.
  • Ignoring geography: EA holds real value wherever US tax work exists, which, in India, means a handful of large metros. In a district-town practice serving local traders, the licence does very little. At IIC Lakshya, this is usually the first question our counsellors raise because a student’s intended city often settles the decision faster than any fee comparison does.

Which One Belongs in Your Plan?

Choose CA if you want statutory authority, sector-wide options and a long career rooted in India, and you can commit four to five years to getting there. Choose EA if you already hold a degree or a job, want a focused US taxation career, and would rather finish within a year and start earning in that field.

Doing both can also work, but the order matters. EA fits comfortably alongside CA studies or a CA job because it demands no articleship, which is why a growing number of qualified CAs add it to move into US tax roles. If you want US-facing work with wider scope than tax alone, the US CPA is closer to CA in coverage than EA is, since it spans accounting, audit and attestation as well.

Making the Right Choice

An Enrolled Agent and a Chartered Accountant do similar work under completely different licences and within completely different tax systems. The useful question was never which credential ranks higher. It is which country’s tax code you want to spend your working life inside, and how many years you can give to become qualified in it.

If that answer still feels unclear, talk it through with someone who has guided students down both routes. A free counselling session with IIC Lakshya will get you further than one more comparison chart.
