Enrolled Agent Exam Dates: Testing Windows and How to Schedule?

Last Updated On -08 Sep 2026

Enrolled Agent exam dates for the testing window with scheduling steps for India candidates

Planning for the Enrolled Agent exam involves more than deciding which part to study first. You also need to understand the testing calendar, blackout period and booking process. Missing an exam window can delay your next attempt by several weeks or even months, regardless of how well prepared you are.

The EA exam schedule follows a defined annual cycle, but testing dates and arrangements may change when the IRS updates its procedures or appoints a new testing provider. This is especially important for international candidates, as their testing options may differ from those available in the United States.

This guide covers the current Enrolled Agent exam dates, the annual testing window, blackout months and the steps involved in scheduling an appointment. It will help you plan your preparation realistically and avoid preventable booking delays.

What the EA Exam Schedule Looks Like?

Three parts stand between you and the credential: Individuals, Businesses, and Representation, Practices and Procedures. You can sit for them in whatever sequence suits you, spread them across several months, and nobody expects you to finish them together.

The IRS Special Enrollment Exam runs on a long season rather than fixed dates. Normally, it opens on 1 May and stays open until the end of February. Book any available day inside that stretch, at whatever time the portal shows as free. Then March and April go dark while the question bank is updated for the new tax year.

Ten months open, two months shut. That's the rhythm in an ordinary year, and it's the part most candidates underestimate.

Enrolled Agent Exam Dates You Need for 2026-27

The 2026-27 cycle broke the pattern because of the vendor change. Domestic candidates in the US started testing on 1 July 2026. For everyone testing internationally, including India, the EA exam testing window runs from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027, and scheduling opens on that same September date.

Six months, not ten. Look at that gap honestly before you sketch a study plan, because a February finish leaves you no room to recover from a failed attempt.

Popular slots can go quickly in the first fortnight after a window opens. If a particular week matters to you, log in early rather than browsing casually in October.

Why March and April Stay Shut?

The blackout isn't red tape. Every question on the exam ties back to US federal tax law frozen at a specific date, and rebuilding that content takes weeks. For the current cycle, questions reflect the Code, forms and publications as amended through 31 December 2025, with current year meaning calendar year 2025.

One consequence worth acting on: buy study material printed for this cycle. Second-hand books from an older window may look identical on the shelf but quietly teach you superseded rules.

The Prometric EA Exam Era Has Ended

For years, the whole process ran through one name. Candidates searched for Prometric EA exam slots, hunted Prometric Enrolled Agent centres in Hyderabad or Bengaluru, and bookmarked Prometric IRS pages. That has changed. Effective 1 March 2026, the IRS moved the exam from Prometric to PSI Services, which now handles development, delivery, support and score reporting.

Two changes matter if you're in India.

The bigger one is location. International testing is now remote only. No physical centre, no flight to another city, no hotel stay the night before the paper. You'll sit at your own desk under online proctoring, which cuts a real chunk out of the budget candidates previously had to set aside.

The second is exam day itself. Each part still holds 100 questions across 3.5 hours, of which 85 count and 15 are unscored trial questions you won't be able to identify. Block four hours in total, since the appointment includes a tutorial, a survey and two ten-minute breaks. Scores now sit on a 200-to-800 scale, with 500 as the pass mark.

How to Schedule Enrolled Agent Exam Slots?

Getting booked is simple enough. Getting booked on time depends almost entirely on the first step.

  • Sort out your PTIN first. No Preparer Tax Identification Number, no exam application. Candidates without a US Social Security Number follow a separate route through Form 8946, either online or by mail. A mailed application can take about six weeks to come through. Start it today if you haven't. In our experience, this single delay pushes more candidates into the next window than any other factor.
  • Set up your PSI account. Register with your PTIN and personal details. Your first and last names must match your government photo ID character for character. A mismatch on exam day counts as a missed appointment, and the money goes with it.
  • Choose a part, pick a date and pay. Payment happens at the time of booking by MasterCard, Visa or American Express. You'll receive a confirmation number straight after. Keep it somewhere you'll find it again, because every later change runs through that number. Read the confirmation email properly too, and flag any mistakes the same day.
  • Test your setup. Remote proctoring requires a secure browser, a single monitor and a room where you won't be disturbed. Nobody else may be in it. Before the exam starts, a proctor reviews a video sweep of your desk, so clear it and keep the lighting bright.

Money, Rescheduling and the 48-Hour Rule

Each part costs $317, paid upfront. Three parts come to $951, somewhere near ₹85,000 depending on where the rupee sits that week, and enrolment adds a further $140 through Form 23 once you've passed everything.

The change rules are unforgiving, so read them once and remember them. Reschedule or cancel your appointment at least 48 hours ahead and there is no additional fee, although the examination fee itself is non-refundable. Inside 48 hours, you're charged the full fee again. Miss the appointment, or turn up half an hour late, and the entire amount is gone. The fee is not transferable either.

Practical advice: book a date you genuinely believe in. Blocking a slot early to create pressure sounds motivating and usually just costs money.

Attempts, Carryover and Getting the Order Right

You get four attempts at each part inside a single window. If one goes badly, you must wait 24 hours before rebooking that same part, though a different part can be booked immediately.

A pass stays valid for three years from the day you earned it. Let that lapse with parts still pending and you'll have to sit for it again. Candidates caught by this year's transition received some relief, with international parts due to expire between 1 May and 31 August 2026 extended by four months.

Sequencing follows from that clock. Long gaps between parts eat into it. One part every three to four months keeps most working candidates comfortably inside the limit, and Part 2 deserves extra weeks because many candidates find businesses take longer to prepare for than the other two.

Count from 28 February and work back. That single habit fixes most EA exam schedule problems because it forces you to see how many study weeks you really have, rather than how many you'd like.

Confirm dates on the IRS enrolled agent page before paying, since this transition cycle does not follow the usual calendar. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your timeline, mentors at IIC Lakshya sit down with candidates free of charge to map the three parts against their work commitments.
