CSEET Exemptions After the Restructure: Who Can Register Directly for Executive?

If you have finished your degree and want to become a Company Secretary, one question can decide your entire timeline. Do you sit the entrance test, or does CS Executive Direct Entry apply to you? The answer changed in 2026, and much of what you may still read online reflects the old rule.

Between 2020 and January 2026, almost every student had to clear CSEET first. Graduates who once walked straight into the Executive Programme lost that shortcut. Then ICSI restructured the entrance test, effective from the June 2026 session. The exemption list was rewritten, and direct admission returned for degree holders.

This guide covers who qualifies now, what proof ICSI requires, how much the exemption costs, and which cut-off date applies to you. It also explains what direct entry does not excuse you from, because that is where students often lose a full exam session.

What the CSEET Restructure Changed?

The November 2025 announcement from ICSI reset several things at once:

CSEET moved from remote-proctored mode to offline, centre-based examinations from June 2026.
Sessions dropped from four a year to three: February, June and October.
The exam now runs across four days, with one paper per day: three subjective papers and one OMR paper.
ICSI published a fresh exemption list, and degree holders were placed back on it.
January 2026 was the last remote-proctored session.

One transitional relief is worth noting. Students who passed CSEET in the January 2026 session can register for the Executive Programme within one year of their result without paying an exemption fee.

CS Executive Direct Entry: Who Qualifies Now

Under the restructured framework, the following candidates are exempted from CSEET and may register directly for the CS Executive Programme:

Bachelor’s degree holders in any discipline
Postgraduate degree holders
Candidates who passed the ICSI Foundation Examination
Candidates who passed the Final stage of the CA course conducted by ICAI
Candidates who passed the Final stage of the Cost Accountancy course conducted by ICMAI
Students appearing in the final year or final semester of a bachelor’s degree, who may register on a provisional basis

ICSI’s fee schedule, effective from 15 April 2026, lists two further groups under direct admission:

ICAI Intermediate pass candidates
Students who have passed the sixth semester of a recognised five-year integrated programme, and those currently appearing in that semester, on a provisional basis

There is one practical caveat. The older pre-2020 rule asked graduates for a minimum of 50% marks and excluded Fine Arts. The restructured announcement does not carry such a condition. Since several coaching websites still repeat the old wording, confirm your category on the ICSI portal before paying any fee.

Documents ICSI Asks For at Registration

Keep scanned copies ready before you open the form:

Degree certificate or consolidated marksheet for graduates and postgraduates
Bona fide certificate or provisional marksheet for final-year students
Pass certificate for CA Final, CMA Final, CA Intermediate or CS Foundation claims
Class 10 certificate as proof of date of birth
Recent photograph, signature, and Aadhaar or passport
Category certificate if you are claiming a fee concession

What Direct Admission Actually Costs

Direct entry carries a CSEET exemption fee. Here is how the two routes compare at the Executive registration stage:

These figures are from the ICSI fee schedule effective from 15 April 2026.

At first glance, direct admission looks ₹5,000 costlier. Look at the full journey, though, and the picture changes:

CSEET registration itself costs ₹7,500, and the examination fee is ₹1,500 per session.
A graduate who sits CSEET therefore spends roughly ₹27,400 before completing Executive registration.
Direct entry brings that amount down to approximately ₹23,400.
You may also save four to eight months of waiting for the next entrance test session.

Cut-Off Dates That Decide Your First Attempt

CS Executive examinations are conducted twice a year, in June and December, across two groups. Your registration date decides which session you can attempt.

A few points are easy to underestimate:

For the June 2027 session, both-group registration closes on 30 November 2026.
Provisional registrants must submit their final degree proof within the timeline stated in the registration letter, or the admission will lapse.
ICSI counts the date your registration is accepted, not the date you started filling out the form.
Bank holidays and heavy portal traffic near the deadline cause genuine failures every session. Apply at least a fortnight early.

What Direct Entry Does Not Cover

Skipping the entrance test does not shorten the Executive Programme itself. You must still complete every requirement below:

The Three Days Orientation Programme (TDOP) before you can enrol for examinations
The pre-examination test, which is compulsory under the current syllabus
Both groups of the Executive Programme, cleared separately with no carry-forward across sessions
Practical training and the Executive Development Programme later in the course

Paper-level exemptions are a separate matter altogether. ICSI allows paper-wise exemptions based on higher qualifications only for ICMAI Final and LL.B. candidates with 50% marks, at ₹1,000 per paper. A general B.Com or MBA does not reduce your paper load.

Mistakes Graduates Make While Registering

Counsellors at IIC Lakshya see the same avoidable mistakes every session:

Paying CSEET fees first. Several graduates register for the entrance test and later learn that they qualified for direct entry. ICSI does not refund fees except in cases of double payment.
Waiting for convocation. A consolidated marksheet is usually accepted. Students lose six months waiting for a printed degree certificate.
Registering late and targeting both groups. A student registering in December 2026 cannot sit both groups in June 2027. Single-group registration closes on 31 January 2027.
Assuming a lighter syllabus. Direct entry removes an entrance exam, not any part of the Executive course.
Following outdated articles. Many pages still state that graduates must compulsorily clear CSEET. That reflects the position from 2020 to 2025, not the current rule.

Direct Entry or CSEET: Which Suits You?

Direct entry suits most graduates. It can save money, reduce the waiting period by a session, and allow you to begin the Executive syllabus while your study habits are still fresh from college.

There is an honest argument on the other side. The restructured CSEET now tests business communication, accounting and the economic environment through written papers. A student with a weak commerce base may benefit from that groundwork before facing company law and taxation at the Executive level. If you graduated from a non-commerce stream and have not studied accounts since Class 12, allow additional preparation time whichever route you choose.

Neither route changes your eligibility for membership, training requirements, or standing in the profession. Employers look at when you cleared the Executive and Professional stages, not how you entered the course.

CS Executive Direct Entry gives graduates, postgraduates, final-year students, and CA or CMA-qualified candidates a faster and more economical route into the course.
