The ICSI examination process has changed significantly in recent years, particularly at the CSEET level. The remote-proctored, computer-based format ended in January 2026. From the June 2026 session, the restructured CSEET is conducted at designated examination centres, with three subjective papers and one OMR-based paper.
Understanding the current ICSI exam pattern is important before you begin preparing. Knowing the paper format, duration and examination-centre requirements can help you practise correctly and avoid unnecessary confusion on exam day.
This article explains the current examination format, registration and enrolment requirements, admit card checks, ICSI exam guidelines, mock-test preparation and what to expect at the centre. If you are still considering company secretaryship, our CS course guide explains the eligibility requirements and stage-wise progression.
Under the restructured CSEET effective from June 2026, none of the four main papers is a computer based test. Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, and Economic and Business Environment are subjective papers. Business Laws and Management is answered on an OMR sheet.
The remote-proctored, computer-based CSEET ended with the January 2026 session. At the Executive and Professional levels, students may still encounter online pre-examination tests as part of the eligibility process, but these should not be confused with the main examinations conducted at designated centres.
The mode for every session is confirmed in that session’s notification. Check icsi.edu yourself rather than relying on what a senior remembers from an earlier attempt. The format has genuinely changed, and older preparation advice may no longer apply.
CSEET now runs as four papers over four days.

Candidates receive an additional 15 minutes to read the question paper. There is no negative marking in the OMR-based Business Laws and Management paper.
There is also a subject-wise minimum to clear along with the aggregate requirement. You need at least 40% in each paper and 50% overall, in one sitting. There is no exemption or carry-forward of individual CSEET paper marks.
Every session, we come across students who do well in three papers and still miss out because one subject was treated casually. This ICSI exam pattern rewards consistency across all four, not brilliance in two. Cross-check the paper timings, centre details and qualifying requirements in your own session’s notification before building a plan around them.
ICSI Registration makes you a student of the Institute. Enrolling for a particular examination session, within that session’s window, is what puts your name on the exam list. Two separate actions, two separate deadlines and students mix them up every year.
CSEET candidates must also complete the Student Induction Programme before enrolling for the examination. Registration under the revised structure remains valid for three years, while a CSEET result is valid for one year from the date it is declared.
The consequence of missing the enrollment window is unforgiving. You may have to wait for the next attempt regardless of how ready you are. Put the dates in your phone the moment they are announced, and do not leave payment until the closing day because portal traffic usually peaks then. Once you pay, confirm that the transaction was successful and retain the fee receipt.
The ICSI Admit Card is made available online shortly before the exam, and most students open it once, note the centre address, and close it. Look longer. Check your name, photograph, signature, registration number, examination centre, paper dates and timings. Any error should be raised with the Institute on the day you download the card. The week of the exam is too late for anything that may require a reply.
Print the admit card well in advance; ICSI does not send a physical copy. Carry the original photo ID specified in the instructions attached to your admit card. It is worth reading those instructions in full, even if you have appeared for an earlier session, because requirements may change.
Reporting time is not a suggestion. Gates close at the stated hour, and centre staff may not be able to make exceptions whether the delay was caused by traffic, a late bus or a maps app pointing to the wrong building. When the ICSI exam centre allotted to you is in an unfamiliar part of the city, locate it a day in advance. That single trip removes much of the morning’s anxiety.
Once you are inside, the sequence is usually straightforward:
Use the reading time properly. Confirm that you have received the correct paper and check the answer booklet or OMR sheet for any printing problem. If something appears wrong, tell the invigilator immediately. A problem reported before the paper begins is far easier to resolve than one raised near the end.
Hardly anyone sets out to break an examination rule. Students assume, and the assumption turns out to be wrong. A smartwatch is an electronic device. So are earphones and fitness bands. These ICSI exam guidelines address some of the most avoidable problems:
The calculator rule is one to verify for your specific paper. It may vary by stage and subject, and students routinely assume in the wrong direction. The instructions attached to your ICSI Admit Card should be your final reference.
An ICSI mock test is some of the cheapest insurance available. Under the revised CSEET pattern, however, your practice must match the paper you will actually write. Faculty at IIC Lakshya typically ask students to complete six to eight timed attempts across the subjective and OMR formats before the real date.
Three habits come out of that practice. You learn to structure a complete subjective answer without letting one question consume too much time. You become more careful while transferring answers to an OMR sheet. And you build a working sense of pace, which is worth more in the final week than another revision list.
Review your attempts by type of mistake, not by score alone. Sit with the paper and separate what you did not know from what you misread, left incomplete or presented poorly. Students are often unsettled to find that the second category is bigger. That realisation alone has helped several borderline results move in the right direction.
Clearing the entrance test is the beginning of a much longer stretch. The CS Executive exam takes company law, tax, accounting and securities laws considerably deeper, and its papers test whether you can write a structured, reasoned answer. The online pre-examination test helps you meet the eligibility requirement, but for the main papers, there is no substitute for writing practice.
Choose your session honestly. Students who enrol for everything at once, without the study hours to support that decision, frequently clear fewer papers than classmates who group their papers sensibly and take two sittings. If you are working or joining midway through the year, count your available hours first. Our Company Secretary course page sets out the stages, subjects and learning pathway.
Syllabus preparation is what students discuss. Process preparation is what quietly decides whether an attempt counts. Knowing the pattern, enrolling on time, reading the admit card properly, practising in the correct format, and reaching the ICSI exam centre with your documents in order none of it substitutes for studying, but all of it prevents losses that have nothing to do with knowledge.
If you are unsure which stage to attempt next or how to spread papers across sessions, talk it through with someone before paying the enrollment fee. Free counselling and course-planning support at IIC Lakshya are available for precisely these questions. A considered second opinion can help you avoid committing to an attempt that does not fit your available preparation time. You can book a session with a mentor when you are ready to discuss your plan.
