ICSI Pre-Exam Test and Online Classes: What's Compulsory Before You Can Sit?

Before appearing for the CS Executive or Professional examinations, students must complete certain requirements prescribed by ICSI. The ICSI Pre-Exam Test is one key requirement, and Executive students must also complete the applicable orientation programme. ICSI also offers online classes, but these are intended as learning support and are not compulsory for exam enrolment.

Understanding the difference between mandatory requirements and optional academic support can help students avoid last-minute issues while submitting their exam forms.

This guide explains what is compulsory at each stage, how the pre-test works, how to log in and download the completion certificate, and where ICSI online classes fit into exam preparation. What ICSI Makes Compulsory Before You Can Sit

Here's the quick answer, taken from ICSI's enrolment guidelines for students. At the Executive stage, you must complete the online pre-examination test and your orientation programme. At the Professional stage, only the pre-test is mandatory.

ODOP applies if you registered between 1 June 2019 and 31 January 2025, while TDOP applies if you registered on or after 1 February 2025.
No coaching class or mock test counts towards eligibility.

What Is the ICSI Pre Exam Test?

The ICSI Pre Exam Test is an online, subject-wise MCQ test. Think of it as a gate, not a grade. Your score doesn't carry into the main exam. You simply need to pass each subject before you can submit the exam form. You can take it from home or a cyber cafe.

ICSI Pre Exam Test Pattern at a Glance

Each subject test runs for 60 minutes, with 50 questions worth 100 marks.
You need at least 40% in each subject to qualify.
For every wrong answer, 25% of the marks assigned to that question are deducted.
You can attempt a subject up to three times a day, with at least eight hours between attempts.
Once you pass a subject, that result stays valid for future exams.

ICSI Pre Exam Test Syllabus

There's no separate pre-test syllabus to hunt for. Each test covers the same subject as its main paper, so your ICSI study material is the right source. Under the 2022, the CS Executive papers are:

Group 1: Jurisprudence, Interpretation and General Laws; Company Law and Practice; Setting Up of Business, Industrial and Labour Laws; Corporate Accounting and Financial Management
Group 2: Capital Market and Securities Laws; Economic, Commercial and Intellectual Property Laws; Tax Laws and Practice

You only need to clear the tests for the group you're enrolling in, and you can finish the other group's tests later. Writing Group 1 this December? Clear those four tests first.

CS Executive Pre Exam Test: Deadlines and Rules

The test applies to every Executive and Professional student under Syllabus 2022.
Students who switched over from Syllabus 2017 pay the pre-test fee separately.
You must pass it by 5:30 PM one working day before the enrolment cut-off, with or without a late fee.
For December 2026, the pre-test deadline is 24 September without a late fee and 9 October with a late fee.
If your five-year registration expires before you finish the pre-test, you pay the fee again when applying for registration de novo or an extension.

ICSI Pre Exam Test Registration and Fee

Students often search for a separate ICSI Pre Exam Test registration form. For most students, there isn't one. The pre-test is linked to your CS registration.

The fee is ₹1,000. If you already paid it while registering for Executive or Professional, you don't pay again.
ICSI issues your login credentials once the fee is on record.

ICSI Pre Exam Test Login: Step by Step

Open the ICSI e-learning portal at elearning.icsi.in. Students sometimes search for this as the E-Learning ICSI Pre Exam portal. It is separate from SMASH, where you fill out exam forms.
Enter your registration number without slashes, followed by @icsi.edu. So, 1234567/10/2018 becomes 1234567102018@icsi.edu.
Log in with the default password from ICSI's user manual, then change it.
Go to My Courses, open the module, and pick the subject.
Read the instructions and start the test.
Use Save and Next as you go, then submit and confirm at the end.

A small tip: ICSI's manual says your screen zoom should stay at 100%. A laptop on stable Wi-Fi is safer than a phone on mobile data.

Downloading Your ICSI Pre-Exam Completion Certificate

The certificate becomes available about two hours after you complete a module's tests. You'll find it in the Completed Courses section under View Certificate.
You don't need to upload it anywhere; keep it for your records. Save a PDF anyway.
If your status doesn't update within a day, email ICSI immediately. Don't wait until deadline week.

The Orientation Step Students Often Forget

The pre-test gets most of the attention. Orientation can also block an exam form, especially for fresh Executive students.

TDOP runs only in offline mode, and only full attendance counts as valid completion.
Seats are limited, so don't delay booking.
If you registered in January 2026 or later, aim to finish TDOP within three months of registration.

Are ICSI Online Classes Compulsory?

No. CS Online Classes by ICSI are a support service, not an eligibility condition. You can skip every session and still sit the exam, as long as you have completed the pre-test and, at the Executive level, the applicable orientation.

What ICSI currently offers:

Free Online Master Classes for Executive and Professional students, including batches for the December 2026 exams.
Doubt-clearing classes closer to the exam. For June 2026, master classes began on 1 March and doubt-clearing classes on 1 May.
Chapter-run online classes for Executive and Professional students, some at a nominal fee.

ICSI CS Executive Online Classes work well as a structured round of revision. They do have limits, though:

Large centralised batches leave little room for personal follow-up.
Some past batches ran during weekday daytime slots, which can clash with college or work.

How to Pick the Best Online Classes for Company Secretary?

If you want more than the free sessions, compare options on substance, not advertisements. Good online classes for CS Executive usually offer:

Clear teaching language. Most students prefer CS Executive Online Classes in English, but check whether faculty explain concepts simply, not just quickly.
Syllabus 2022 alignment, with amendments updated for your session.
Evaluated mock tests, because presentation matters in descriptive answers.
Short MCQ quizzes, which double as pre-test practice.
Recorded lectures with live doubt-solving, so you can study around college or work.

Common Mistakes We See Every Exam Cycle

Taking the pre-test on the final evening, when the portal is busiest.
Clearing three of four Group 1 tests and assuming that's enough.
Treating ICSI online classes as a substitute for TDOP.
Booking TDOP late and finding no seats at the nearest chapter.
Guessing freely and losing marks to negative marking.
Not verifying the exam fee payment, since ICSI generates request IDs even for failed transactions.

The rules may look complicated, but the sequence is simple. Clear the ICSI Pre Exam Test for every subject in your group. Finish ODOP or TDOP if you're at the Executive level. Then submit your exam form. Online classes can support your preparation, but they're your call.
