Career opportunities after CA extend well beyond Big 4 firms, corporate finance teams, advisory companies and private practice. Qualified Chartered Accountants are also recruited by PSUs, the Reserve Bank of India, the Comptroller and Auditor General and other public institutions.
Public sector openings may be fewer, but they offer work the private sector rarely covers: regulation, public audit, infrastructure finance and central banking policy. Some roles also provide competitive entry-level pay, structured benefits and long-term stability.
This article explains which government and PSU organisations recruit CAs, the available entry routes, eligibility requirements, selection processes and expected pay. It also covers the opportunities available after CA Inter. If you are still exploring the qualification, our guide to the CA course explains the syllabus and timeline.
There’s no single reason. Mostly, it’s a visibility problem.
ICAI campus placements put Big 4 recruiters, banks and large corporates in front of students twice a year, in one place, on a fixed calendar. Government jobs for CA holders arrive on no shared calendar at all. A PSU posts a notification on its own careers page, keeps the window open for three weeks, and closes it. NTPC, IRCTC, RITES, IIFCL, NHIDCL, fertiliser and mining companies, and state-level undertakings in Kerala and Tamil Nadu each advertise separately.
The coaching ecosystem splits things further. Students preparing for RBI Grade B or SEBI Grade A usually come from a banking-exam background, and they talk to each other rather than to CA aspirants. A qualification that opens both exams sits in one room while the information sits in another.
Four broad routes exist. They ask different things from you, and they reward different temperaments.
PSU jobs for CA candidates are the most direct route because most notifications name your qualification outright. NTPC’s Executive Trainee (Finance) recruitment in 2026 listed 25 posts in the E1 grade, open to qualified CAs and CMAs, on a pay scale starting at ₹40,000 basic with an approximate annual CTC of ₹15 lakh. Comparable notifications appear through the year from IRCTC, RITES, BNPM, port trusts and NTPC’s own subsidiaries.
PSUs also recruit through ICAI campus placement drives. In the 62nd campus placement programme, the highest domestic offer came from Power Finance Corporation, a government company, at roughly ₹26.6 lakh. ONGC, HPCL and Oil India have been regular participants too. Packages shift every cycle, so read any figure as an indication rather than a promise.
For RBI Grade B (DR) General, the Chartered Accountant qualification is recognised at a level that can make a CA eligible even with a modest graduation percentage, subject to the wording of the year’s notification. The usual age window is 21 to 30. Selection runs through Phase I, Phase II and an interview.
Be clear-eyed about the numbers. The 2026 RBI Grade B cycle advertised 60 vacancies across the General, DEPR and DSIM streams, and roughly 62,000 people applied. Verify the current criteria on rbi.org.in before you plan around them.
SEBI Grade A is the exam where CA training pays off most visibly. The General stream accepts CA, CS, CMA and CFA holders alongside master’s degree candidates, and Paper 2 draws on commerce, accountancy, costing, finance, management and company law. A qualified CA already knows most of that. What’s left is quantitative aptitude, English, reasoning and current affairs, which is a supplementary study problem rather than a completely fresh subject to learn.
Public sector banks hire CAs as Specialist Officers into credit, risk, treasury and internal audit functions, and those vacancies come through IBPS or a bank’s own drive. NABARD Grade A, SIDBI, IIFCL and similar institutions run their own Assistant Manager recruitment. These roles suit people who want government-sector stability with work that still looks like finance rather than routine compliance.
The Civil Services Examination allocates officers to the Indian Audit and Accounts Service, the Indian Civil Accounts Service and the Indian Defence Accounts Service. Any graduate can sit for it, and CAs often pick Commerce and Accountancy as their optional because the overlap is real.
Here’s the honest part. Your CA background helps with one optional paper and gives you something substantial to say in the interview. It does very little for General Studies, and CSE preparation still asks for a year or more of a completely different kind of reading. Check the notification on UPSC official website rather than relying on what a senior told you two years ago.
SSC CGL’s Assistant Audit Officer post is worth knowing about as well. It is a Group B gazetted role under the CAG at Pay Level 8, with basic pay starting at ₹47,600. Graduation is the essential requirement and CA is only “desirable”, so you compete with general graduates. AAO vacancies have not featured in every recent CGL cycle, which is another reason to read the year’s notification instead of assuming.

Entry compensation in a large PSU sits in the ₹12–16 lakh CTC range, and a good part of that is allowances, medical cover and retirement benefits rather than take-home salary. An Assistant Audit Officer starts at ₹47,600 basic, with in-hand pay of roughly ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 a month depending on city class and dearness allowance. Central bank and regulator scales sit higher again.
The trade-off is the shape of the curve, not the starting point. A CA in a Big 4 or a fast-growing corporate may double their package in four or five years and move towards a controller or CFO track. Government pay moves on scales and promotion cycles instead. The ceiling is lower. The floor is much steadier, and these roles are generally less exposed to recessions, restructuring and audit-season attrition. For a broader comparison, read our guide to the career scope after CA Final.
Postings are the other trade-off, and it’s the one Kerala students raise most often in counselling sessions. PSU roles are usually all-India transferable. If working within driving distance of home matters more to you than the brand on your ID card, factor that in before you sit for the exam, not after you clear it.
Let’s be straight about this, because plenty of websites aren’t. Officer-grade government posts almost always ask for the completed qualification or a degree. The opportunities after CA Inter are real but junior: accounts assistant and audit assistant roles in state corporations, semi-qualified vacancies in banks and insurance companies, and industrial training placements inside PSU finance departments during articleship.
So, the practical job opportunities after CA Inter look like experience-building steps, not destinations. The mistake we see repeatedly at IIC Lakshya is students treating CA Inter as an endpoint and letting their graduation lapse. Finish the degree alongside your articleship. It keeps SSC CGL, IBPS, state PSC and every graduate-level exam open while you complete CA Final.
Students wait for CA Final results before looking at government notifications. By then, an age cut-off or a three-week application window may already have passed.
They also treat a government career after CA as the fallback plan they’ll consider if campus placements disappoint. Interview panels notice this immediately. Someone who genuinely wants the role can talk about public audit or capital market regulation for ten minutes; someone who simply wants a job usually cannot.
The most overlooked option barely gets discussed at all. Practising Chartered Accountants can pursue empanelment for CAG-allocated audits and statutory or concurrent audit assignments involving public sector banks and government companies. That’s public sector work without being a government employee, and a two-person firm in Kozhikode can pursue it as readily as a large one in Mumbai. Details are available through ICAI’s empanelment announcements and the CAG empanelment portal.
Write down what you want your work to look like five years from now, in specific terms. If the answer involves deal cycles, specialisation and fast pay growth, practice or industry may serve you better. If it involves auditing a state’s expenditure, financing a transmission line, or reading a mutual fund’s disclosures for a living, then public sector jobs for Chartered Accountants deserve a serious look rather than a glance.
The public sector isn’t the easier option among the career opportunities after CA. It’s a different one, on a slower calendar, with a different definition of a good year. Counsellors at IIC Lakshya work through this choice with students every admission season, and a single counselling session often takes twenty minutes and saves two years.
