Many students wonder whether they can start CMA USA during college or need to wait until graduation. You can register and take both exam parts while you're still studying. Your degree and relevant work experience are required when you apply for the final certification.

This guide explains the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) eligibility rules, whether you can start after plus two or during B.Com, how long the course takes in India, and what changed in the 2026 exam format. It also covers common mistakes to avoid when planning your exams. For batches and programme details, see our CMA USA course page.

CMA USA Eligibility Criteria at a Glance

Alongside passing both exam parts, IMA lists four key requirements for CMA USA certification. Only two of them apply before you write the exams.

Can I Do CMA USA While Doing B.Com?

Yes, and it's a common route for commerce students in India. If you've been asking every education provider, Can I do a US CMA before graduation?, the answer is a clear yes. Your B.Com already covers accounting, costing, and basic finance, which gives you a head start on Part 1.

The more useful question is when to begin:

  • First year: You get the longest runway, but your accounting base is still thin. It suits students who are already sure about finance.
  • Second year: This is what we usually recommend. Two semesters of accounting are behind you, and both parts can be done before final-year exams.
  • Final year: It still works, but projects, placements and semester exams compete for your time. Many students write one part before graduating and one after.

Here's a typical plan. A second-year student who starts preparing in June can target Part 1 in the January–February window. Part 2 can follow in May–June or September–October. By graduation, both exams could be done.

Can I Go for CMA US After Plus 2?

Technically, yes. IMA sets no minimum and no maximum age for CMA eligibility, and it doesn't ask for a degree at registration. A student fresh out of Class 12 can take membership and book an exam.

In practice, we rarely suggest writing the exams straight after plus two:

  • The papers assume working knowledge of financial statements, costing, and corporate finance.
  • Your three-year exam window starts the day you pay the entrance fee.
  • You'll still need a degree for certification, so the CMA can't replace college.

A better approach is pairing the CMA USA course with your degree from day one. Programs like B.Com with CMA USA let you build the accounting base first. Students from science or humanities streams should allow extra time for accounting basics.

Can We Do CMA USA After B.Com?

Absolutely. Once you graduate, you've met the education requirement, so only the exams and experience remain. A CMA USA course after BCom suits graduates who want a globally recognised qualification without a long study period.

  • If you already work in accounts, finance or audit, your current job may count toward experience.
  • Freshers can clear the exams first and build experience in their first job.
  • M.Com and MBA students follow the same path, since their bachelor's degree already qualifies.

CMA Eligibility for Indian Students: Degree and Experience

The CMA USA course eligibility in India follows IMA's global rules. Indian candidates don't face a separate set of criteria.

The Education Requirement

  • Any bachelor's degree from an accredited institution works, including B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc and B.Tech.
  • IMA also accepts certain professional qualifications in place of a degree, such as CA from ICAI, CS from ICSI and CMA from ICMAI. Check IMA's candidate handbook for its approved-qualification list before applying.
  • There's no minimum percentage requirement.

The Experience Requirement

  • You need two continuous years of full-time work in management accounting or financial management, or the part-time equivalent.
  • Roles in budgeting, financial reporting, cost accounting, internal controls, treasury and corporate finance generally qualify.
  • Internships and non-technical jobs don't count.
  • You can complete the experience before the exams or within seven years of passing. IMA explains which roles count in its CMA Candidate Handbook.

This is where the eligibility for CMA in US certification trips students up. Passing both parts doesn't make you a CMA on its own, as IMA explains in its guide to CMA certification.

CMA USA Exam Details After the 2026 Format Change

The exam has two parts, which you can take in any order.

  • Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics
  • Part 2: Strategic Financial Management
  • Duration: Four hours per part
  • Format: 100 multiple-choice questions, followed by two case-based question sets (CBQs)
  • Testing windows: January–February, May–June and September–October
  • Passing score: 360 out of 500 in each part

The format is the biggest update this year. From the September–October 2026 window, essays have been retired, and CBQs now apply to English-language exams across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa, except in Japan, mainland China and Taiwan. That covers candidates in India and the Gulf. CBQs use tasks such as drag-and-drop, select-from-a-list and numerical response. The change is set out in IMA's handbook.

The topics, exam length and price stay the same, and you still need at least 50% in the MCQ section to reach the CBQs. Scores may also arrive within one to two weeks, compared with roughly six weeks under the essay format. See IMA's score guidance.

CMA USA Registration and Course Fees for Students

CMA USA registration happens fully online:

  • Create an IMA account and choose student membership if you're enrolled in college.
  • Pay the CMA entrance fee.
  • Register for Part 1, Part 2 or both.
  • Book your Prometric slot once IMA emails your Authorisation to Test.
  • Submit your transcripts and experience proof once you've met the requirements.

Student members pay reduced CMA programme fees; see IMA's student membership page for current membership details. Each exam registration, including a retake, costs $345 for student members against $460 for professionals. Coaching fees are separate and vary by institute and study mode. For the registration steps, see our CMA USA registration guide.

CMA USA Course Duration in India

IMA gives you three years from paying the entrance fee to pass both parts, though most candidates finish in 12 to 18 months. How long studying takes depends on your routine.

  • Graduates or gap-year students studying full-time: around 9 to 12 months
  • College students balancing semesters: 12 to 18 months is more realistic
  • Working professionals: 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer during busy seasons

Plan your exam dates around university exams, not the other way round.

Common Mistakes College Students Make

  • Paying the entrance fee too early. Your three-year clock starts right away, so pay when you're ready to study seriously.
  • Booking exams during university exam season. A clash can force you to reschedule or walk in underprepared.
  • Assuming that passing means you're certified. Certification comes only after your degree and experience are verified.
  • Buying professional membership as a student. You'll pay more than you need to.
  • Practicing only MCQs. The case-based section rewards applied thinking, so work on it from the start.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Starting in College

Benefits

  • You finish the exams before or soon after graduation.
  • Your CV can stand out on campus and in off-campus hiring for finance roles.
  • Exam-style study often feels easier while you're still in academic mode.
  • The qualification is well known among multinational employers in India and the Gulf.

Drawbacks

  • Handling two syllabi at once is tiring, especially near semester exams.
  • You can't use the CMA title until you complete your degree and two years of relevant work.
  • Fees add up if you need to retake a part.
  • Some students lose momentum and let their exam window expire.

Career Scope and Salary: Realistic Expectations

Most CMA USA holders in India work in planning and management accounting roles, such as:

Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kochi hire for these roles, and Gulf markets like Dubai also recruit CMAs.

Be careful with big salary figures you see online. Freshers with a B.Com who have cleared the CMA USA exams may start between ₹4 LPA and ₹8 LPA, depending on the city, the company and interview performance. Pay can grow with three to five years in FP&A or controllership. The qualification can help you get shortlisted, but your Excel, reporting and communication skills matter to the offer.
