Passing Both CMA USA Parts Doesn't Mean You're Certified Yet, Here's Why?

CMA USA Certificate requirements after passing both exam parts

Passing both parts of the CMA USA exam is a significant milestone, but it does not automatically make you a certified CMA. The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) issues the CMA USA Certificate only after you complete the required education, professional experience, membership and ethical requirements.

Many candidates concentrate entirely on clearing the two exams and only learn about these additional conditions afterwards. Understanding them early can help you avoid certification delays and ensure that your CMA USA course investment leads to the credential you plan to add to your resume.

This article explains what US CMA Certification requires after the exams, which work profiles IMA accepts, the mistakes that commonly delay certification, and how to complete the remaining steps within the required timelines.

What Passing Both Parts Actually Means in CMA USA?

Clearing Part 1 and Part 2 means you have passed the assessment stage. Nothing more.

Here is what your two passes give you:

  • A record of both passed parts with the ICMA, the certifying body under IMA
  • The ability to move on to the remaining certification steps
  • A seven-year window to complete the education and experience requirements
  • The right to say you have passed the CMA exams, not that you are a CMA

The last point matters. Using CMA before IMA issues your certificate is a misrepresentation, and employers who understand the credential will spot it.

CMA USA Certificate Requirements

The CMA certification requirements are fixed and apply to every candidate, whether in India or elsewhere.

Requirement

Status check

Active IMA membership

Must remain active until the certificate is issued

Bachelor’s degree or approved certification

Proof must be submitted within seven years of passing

Two continuous years of qualifying experience

May be completed before the exams or within seven years after passing

Compliance with IMA’s ethics statement

Required as part of the certification process

Miss any one of these, and the CMA USA certification process simply stops where it is. IMA does not send reminders in the way a university does.

The Degree Rule Students Misread Most

Plenty of B.Com and BBA students sit for the exams while completing their degree, which IMA allows. The confusion usually begins afterwards.

Things worth knowing about the education condition:

  • Any bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is accepted, including science, arts and engineering
  • There is no minimum percentage or subject restriction
  • Degrees earned through recognised distance and open universities are evaluated on accreditation, not the mode of study
  • Certain professional qualifications, including ICAI’s CA, ICSI’s CS and ICMAI’s CMA, are accepted in place of a degree
  • Transcripts must reach IMA within seven years of your second pass

A student who clears both parts in the second year of B.Com has plenty of time to complete the requirement. A candidate who passed years ago and never submitted degree proof has far less room to delay.

CMA USA Work Experience: What Counts?

This is where most delays happen. IMA asks for two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. The word continuous is doing real work in that sentence.

The CMA USA experience requirements allow some flexibility:

  • Full-time roles count at face value
  • Part-time roles of at least 20 hours a week count at one year of credit for every two years worked
  • Experience earned in India, the UAE or anywhere else is equally valid
  • The two years may be completed before your exams or within seven years afterwards
  • Teaching accounting or finance above the introductory level may count when it is full-time and forms at least 60% of the course load over two years

Roles That IMA Accepts

Your job title matters less than the judgement your work demands. Qualifying US CMA work experience typically involves:

  • Preparing and interpreting financial statements
  • Financial planning and analysis, including FP&A roles
  • Monthly, quarterly and year-end closing
  • Internal or external audit work
  • Budget preparation, variance analysis and reporting
  • Managing the general ledger and balance sheet
  • Forecasting and costing analysis
  • Investment appraisal and risk evaluation

Analysts, cost accountants, budget analysts, internal auditors, treasury executives and corporate accountants usually clear this bar without trouble.

Roles That Get Rejected

IMA is explicit about what does not count:

  • Internships and trainee positions, however long they run
  • Clerical and data-entry work, including basic bookkeeping
  • Non-technical roles where accounting appears only occasionally
  • Sales, marketing, manufacturing, engineering, personnel and general management profiles

A candidate handling vendor invoices in a shared services centre often assumes the role qualifies. It may not, unless the work regularly involves judgement using management accounting principles. Check the job description honestly before building your plan around it.

The Seven-Year Clock Behind the Process

Two timelines run in parallel, and candidates rarely track both.

  • Three years from programme entry to clear both parts. Miss the deadline, and any passed part expires.
  • Seven years from your final pass to submit degree proof and complete the CMA USA work experience requirement.

If the seven-year window closes while your file is incomplete, your exam passes expire. Both parts must then be taken again. It is an avoidable loss, and we have seen it happen to candidates who moved abroad, changed careers or simply forgot the deadline after a promotion.

Mistakes We See Right After Results Day

A few patterns repeat often enough to be worth naming:

  • Letting IMA membership lapse because the exams are over, which pauses the certification process
  • Assuming the certificate arrives automatically once two years of work are complete
  • Counting an eight-month internship towards the two-year requirement
  • Splitting experience across unrelated or non-qualifying roles and losing continuity
  • Delaying experience verification until the reporting manager has left the company
  • Not saving offer letters, appointment letters and reporting structures for possible verification

That last point is worth acting on today. Keep your employment records organised and collect any details you may need from your reporting manager while you still work together.

How to Get CMA Certification Without Delay?

The sequence below keeps the CMA USA certification process tidy, whether you are still studying or already working.

  • Renew your IMA membership every year until the certificate is issued
  • Arrange for your official degree transcripts to be submitted as soon as your degree is awarded
  • Choose your first job with the experience rule in mind, not only the salary
  • Track your two years with dates, designations and a short description of your duties
  • Submit the work verification form according to IMA’s current instructions once the required experience is complete
  • Allow time for IMA’s review and processing before approval

If you are unsure whether your current profile qualifies, discuss it with an academic mentor at IIC Lakshya before switching jobs. A short conversation can save a year of misdirected work. Our counselling team also helps final-year students map a realistic route through CMA USA eligibility and placements.

What Happens After the Certificate Arrives

Certification is not the final line either. To keep the credential active, you must complete 30 hours of continuing professional education each year, including two hours in ethics. The full conditions are published by the Institute of Management Accountants in its CMA Handbook, which is updated periodically.

What You Need to Remember

Knowing how to become CMA certified is different from knowing how to pass the exams. The papers test your knowledge, while the remaining CMA certification requirements confirm your academic and professional grounding.

Treat the exam result as the halfway mark. Keep your membership active, get your degree on file, and build two clean years of qualifying experience. Do that, and receiving the CMA USA Certificate becomes a matter of completing the formalities rather than preparing for another round of exams.

If you are unsure where your current role stands against the experience rule, talk to a counsellor before your next career move.
