Studying Cost Accounting, Financial Management, and Taxation gives you technical knowledge. But have you ever wondered what happens when you actually enter a company and work with budgets, inventory, reports, taxation, or costing data?
That is where CMA Practical Training becomes important. ICMAI includes practical training in the CMA India pathway so that students can apply classroom concepts in real professional situations. CMA India for working professionals in accounts and finance is a significant professional qualification step up.
Under the current practical training scheme, students registered for CMA Intermediate on or after 11 February 2020 have to complete 15 months of practical training. The training can begin from the Intermediate level.
So, practical training is not simply something you complete to satisfy a rule. It can become your first serious exposure to the finance profession. Let us understand how it works in 2026.
The current ICMAI Practical Training Scheme requires 15 months of training. Students can undergo training under:
ICMAI states that practical training must be completed on a full-time basis.
The Institute also allows students to complete training under more than one employer. However, not more than three changes of employer or principal are permitted during the 15-month training period. This gives students some flexibility while still maintaining continuity.
How long do you actually need to work?
The total required practical training period is 15 months.
ICMAI currently specifies working hours of 35 hours per week for a Cost and Management Trainee. As a Commerce fresher, CMA India is a significant step to build a finance career.
Students are also entitled to one day's paid leave per month, excluding normal holidays. In addition, the scheme provides up to 60 days of unpaid examination leave during the total training period. Excess leave has to be compensated through additional training.
For students, this means practical training works more like a professional job than a casual internship. You are expected to:
That experience can make the transition from student life to a full-time finance career much easier.
When should you start CMA Practical Training?
You can start it from the Intermediate level.
Starting early can be useful because it allows you to build experience while progressing through the CMA course. However, Final examination eligibility also depends on your practical training status. You should go through the CMA India final previous year question papers to develop a better understanding and insights.
ICMAI's current scheme states that, for Final exam eligibility, students have to satisfy the training requirement applicable on the specified cut-off date. For the December examination, Form T-5 certification is linked to 31 August, with at least 10 months of training completed by that date. For the June examination, the cut-off is 28 or 29 February, again requiring at least 10 months of training.
Therefore, do not wait until CMA Final to start thinking about training. Plan it alongside your examination timeline.
Can you simply join any company and count the experience as CMA Practical Training? Not automatically. The organisation and the type of work must meet ICMAI's recognition requirements.
The scheme recognises training under Practising Cost Accountants, Cost Accountant firms and several categories of organisations, including government bodies, banks, insurance companies, PSUs, recognised educational institutions, MSMEs and startups. Other qualifying organisations may also be recognised subject to the applicable conditions.
After joining, students should intimate ICMAI within 30 days. The applicable forms include:
ICMAI also maintains an online training portal and databases of organisations and professionals available for practical training. Therefore, the ICMAI registration will also guide you through the course fees, documents, and dates.
Yes, CMA Practical Training can include a stipend. However, the amount differs based on the type of employer, your CMA level, and the city category.
For corporates and organisations other than Practising Cost Accountants or their firms, the current first-year minimum recommended stipend for a student pursuing CMA Intermediate is:
|
City Category |
Intermediate Student - Year 1 |
|
Category X |
₹20,000 per month |
|
Category Y |
₹18,000 per month |
|
Category Z |
₹15,000 per month |
For students pursuing CMA Final, the corresponding first-year recommended amounts are ₹25,000, ₹22,000 and ₹20,000 respectively. This revised structure has been applied to corporates and organisations from 1 August 2024.
Training under a Practising Cost Accountant or Cost Accountant firm follows a different recommended stipend structure. Therefore, always check the current ICMAI scheme and the specific offer from the organisation before joining. Do not choose practical training only based on stipend.
Ask yourself:
Will this role actually teach me useful finance skills?
A slightly higher stipend may not compensate for poor learning exposure.
One of the strongest parts of CMA Practical Training is the variety of recognised work areas. ICMAI includes fields such as:
ICMAI also recognises certain teaching and engineering-related areas where the work fits the practical training framework. This means CMA training does not have to be limited to traditional cost accounting.
For example, if your long-term goal is FP&A, you could look for exposure to budgeting, variance analysis and management reporting. If you prefer manufacturing finance, try to gain experience in product costing, inventory and plant finance.
If taxation interests you, look for roles involving GST, direct taxes and compliance. Your training choice can influence the direction of your first full-time job.
Finding practical training becomes easier if you follow a structured approach.
Step 1: Decide what you want to learn.
Before applying randomly, choose two or three areas that interest you.
For example:
Costing + FP&A + Manufacturing Finance
or:
Taxation + Audit + Compliance
This makes your job search more focused.
Step 2: Check ICMAI's Practical Training section.
ICMAI maintains lists of organisations registered or providing practical training. It also publishes practical training opportunities and opportunities for semi-qualified CMA students. Use these official resources before relying only on job portals.
Step 3: Prepare a simple finance-focused CV.
Include:
Keep your CV simple and relevant.
Step 4: Search for the right roles.
Look for job titles such as:
Do not search only for “CMA Practical Training.”Companies may use different job titles for similar work. CMA India is also significant for IT-to-Finance career transition for a lot of students.
Step 5: Check whether the work area qualifies.
Before joining, compare the job description with ICMAI's recognised training areas. If you are unsure, verify the organisation and role through ICMAI.
Step 6: Ask useful questions during the interview.
Instead of asking only about stipend, ask:
These questions tell you more about the value of the role.
Step 7: Complete the ICMAI formalities.
After joining, submit the applicable T-1 or T-4 form and intimate ICMAI within the prescribed period. Later, complete the required T-5 process. Keep copies of all forms, acknowledgements and employment documents.
CMA Practical Training connects your textbooks with real business. The current requirement is 15 months of full-time practical training, and students can start from the Intermediate level.
If you are a Class 12 student exploring CMA India, practical training may seem far away today. Still, it shows that the qualification is designed to combine examinations with workplace exposure. If you are a graduate, choose training that adds practical value to your degree.
And if you are already working in finance or accounting, check whether your existing experience falls within ICMAI's recognised organisations and work areas. Eligible students with qualifying work experience may apply for exemption through the prescribed process. Your first training role does not have to define your entire career. But the skills you build there can shape your next opportunity.
