CA Industrial Training vs Regular Articleship Guide

CA Industrial Training vs Regular Articleship Guide

CA students spend years learning accounting, taxation, audit, finance, and business concepts. However, books alone cannot prepare you for every professional situation. This is why practical training plays an important role in the CA journey.

Under ICAI's current New Scheme, practical training lasts for two years. Students can begin it after passing both groups of CA Intermediate and completing ICITSS. During this journey, you may also hear another term: Industrial Training. So, what exactly is the difference?

Regular articleship usually gives you practical exposure under a practising Chartered Accountant or CA firm. Industrial training, on the other hand, allows eligible students to spend the latter part of their practical training in an eligible organisation.

You generally start practical training first and may later move into industrial training if you qualify, and it matches your career plans. If you have cleared the CA Foundation, you can apply for your training. Let's understand both options.

Key Differences

Regular articleship and industrial training can teach you very different things. The major differences involve:

  • Type of organisation
  • Nature of work
  • Client exposure
  • Corporate exposure
  • Stipend
  • Eligibility
  • Career direction
  • Professional network
  • Work environment
  • Level of specialisation

Regular articleship may expose you to several clients and professional assignments. Industrial training usually lets you understand one organisation from the inside. Think about it this way.

  • Articleship teaches you how professionals serve businesses.
  • Industrial training can teach you how finance works inside a business.

Neither experience is automatically better. The right choice depends on where you want your CA career to go. If you fail in one group of CA Inter, you have to ensure that you pass so that you are better prepared for training.

Work Type

Work exposure is probably the biggest difference. During regular articleship, students may work across:

  • Statutory audit
  • Internal audit
  • Tax audit
  • Income tax
  • GST
  • Accounting
  • Financial reporting
  • Compliance
  • Bank audits
  • Company-related assignments
  • Client communication

The exact exposure depends on the CA firm. Industrial training may offer more company-focused work, such as:

  • Financial planning
  • Budgeting
  • Management reporting
  • Internal controls
  • Financial analysis
  • Treasury
  • Risk management
  • Taxation
  • Corporate accounting
  • Business finance
  • MIS reporting

The experience can also vary significantly depending on the organisation and department. Suppose you want to start your own CA practice one day. Regular articleship may give you useful exposure to clients, tax, audit, compliance, and professional practice.

However, suppose your goal is to work in corporate finance. Industrial training may help you understand how finance teams function inside larger organisations. Therefore, always connect your training choice with your career goal. After you have got your CA Foundation results, you should start preparing for your future career in industrial finance.

Stipend

Stipend often attracts students towards industrial training. ICAI's January 2026 industrial-training requirements state that industrial trainees must receive a mutually agreed monthly stipend, subject to a minimum of ₹15,000 per month. Companies may offer more depending on:

  • Organisation
  • Location
  • Role
  • Department
  • Student profile
  • Company policy

Regular articleship also carries ICAI-prescribed stipend requirements. However, there is an important 2026 update. You will also enhance your ICAI Industrial Training by learning the application process and eligibility criteria.

As of July 2026, ICAI had published proposed revised stipend rates for students undergoing the two-year practical training under the New Scheme. The proposal was going through the regulatory amendment process, so students should check the latest notified rate before comparing offers.

Therefore, do not select industrial training only for money. A higher stipend feels attractive today. Strong experience can matter for many years.

Eligibility

You cannot normally move into industrial training immediately after starting practical training. Under ICAI's 2026 requirements, an articled assistant becomes eligible for industrial training after:

  • Passing the applicable Intermediate examination
  • Completing at least 12 months of practical training
  • Meeting ICAI's applicable requirements
  • Joining an eligible organisation for industrial training

The industrial-training period can range from 9 to 12 months. The student must also intimate the Principal at least three months before the proposed start of industrial training. You also get to learn about the placement scope for Chartered Accountants.

Industrial training must take place under the prescribed ICAI framework. For Class 12 students, you do not need to worry about this choice immediately. Your journey will first involve:

  • Entering the CA course
  • Clearing the required examinations
  • Developing strong fundamentals
  • Reaching Intermediate
  • Starting practical training
  • Understanding your career interests

By the time industrial training becomes relevant, you should have a clearer idea of whether practice or industry interests you more.

Exam Leaves

Students often ask:

“Will industrial training give me enough leave for CA Final preparation?”

Do not assume that joining a company automatically means you will receive several months of study leave. Under the current two-year practical-training framework, ICAI's July 2026 FAQ states that an articled assistant is permitted 12 leaves in each year of practical training.

Industrial training also forms part of practical training. ICAI specifically warns industrial-training organisations about compliance with rules relating to excess leave. Therefore, before joining either option, discuss:

  • Study-leave policy
  • Working hours
  • Busy periods
  • Exam preparation needs
  • Leave approval process
  • Treatment of excess leave
  • Work-from-office requirements
  • Travel expectations

Do not depend only on what another student tells you. Ask the firm or organisation directly. Also, protect your study schedule from day one. Waiting until the final few months can make preparation stressful. You also need to keep in mind the right CA Final Elective paper selection for a better future CA career.

Which is Better

There is no single winner. Industrial training is not automatically better because the stipend may be higher. Regular articleship is not automatically better because it follows the traditional CA practice environment.

Your career goal should guide the decision. Your answers will tell you more than any online ranking.

Choose Regular Articleship if:

Regular articleship may suit you better if you want broad professional-practice exposure. For example, imagine you want to open your own CA firm five years after qualification.

Experience in client management, tax filings, audit assignments, documentation, and compliance may become highly useful. A broad articleship can prepare you for that environment. You must know and develop the top skills to learn during articleship for CA students.

Choose Industrial Training If:

Industrial training may suit students who want to build a career inside companies. Industrial training can also help you understand how different departments interact. Finance does not work alone. You may deal with:

  • Sales teams
  • Operations
  • Procurement
  • Management
  • Banks
  • Legal teams
  • Business heads
  • Internal auditors

That exposure can help you see finance from a management point of view rather than only from an auditor's point of view.

Wrapping Up!

CA Industrial Training and regular articleship both offer valuable learning. But they prepare you in different ways. Under the current scheme, remember that industrial training is an option during the later part of your practical training. Eligible students can undertake it for 9 to 12 months after meeting the required conditions.

Choose learning before labels. A famous company will not help much if your role teaches you very little. Similarly, a smaller CA firm can become an excellent training ground if you handle meaningful assignments and understand what you are doing.

For Class 12 students, this decision may still be years away. However, remember one lesson early: CA is not only about clearing exams. Practical exposure can shape the professional you become.

For current CA students, do not make the choice only because your friends are moving into industrial training. Look at your own career. Then choose the training experience that moves you closer to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is CA practical training under the New Scheme?

The practical training period under the current New Scheme is two years.

When can I become eligible for industrial training?

You need to pass the applicable Intermediate examination and complete at least 12 months of practical training before becoming eligible, subject to ICAI's requirements.

Can I start industrial training directly after CA Intermediate?

Not as your first practical-training placement under the current framework. Industrial training is permitted during the later part of the two-year practical-training period.

Does industrial training always pay more than articleship?

Industrial training has a ₹15,000 minimum under the current ICAI requirements. Regular articleship follows separate ICAI stipend rules. However, actual offers can differ, so students should compare both learning and compensation.

Is industrial training better for corporate jobs?

It can be useful for students interested in corporate finance, FP&A, treasury, internal controls, accounting, risk, and similar industry roles. However, your department and actual responsibilities matter more than the industrial training label alone.
