ACCA Two-Year Plan: Exams, Skills and Experience

You want to pursue ACCA. You have researched the qualification, explored career opportunities, and imagined yourself working in a leading accounting or finance organisation.

Then someone gives you unexpected advice: “Wait two years before pursuing ACCA.”

Naturally, you might feel disappointed. But what if waiting is actually the right decision for your current profile?

Perhaps you need to finish your degree, strengthen your accounting basics, improve your finances, or gain relevant work experience. The important question is not simply whether you should wait. Before you enrol in ACCA, you need to learn about the exams, fees, and exemptions so that you develop your skills accordingly.

It is what you should accomplish during those two years.

For Class 12 students, commerce graduates, CA aspirants, and working professionals, a well-planned 24-month period can create a stronger foundation for professional growth. Let's explore how to use that time effectively.

Two-Year Timeline Before Completing the ACCA

A two-year ACCA plan should begin with an honest assessment of your current position. Some candidates may be ready to start immediately. Others may benefit from improving their academic foundation or professional circumstances first.

Remember that ACCA does not generally require candidates to wait two years before beginning. For non-commerce students, accounting basics are a must to learn while completing their ACCA certification.

Also, completing all ACCA examinations within 24 months is not guaranteed. Your progress depends on exemptions, preparation, exam results, and the qualification structure applicable to you. Use the following framework as a flexible roadmap rather than a guaranteed completion schedule.

Phase 1: Strategic Evaluation of the 2-Year Horizon

Before committing to a timeline, identify what is holding you back. Are you struggling with accounting fundamentals? Do you lack sufficient study time? Are financial responsibilities making enrolment difficult?

Perhaps you are completing Class 12 or pursuing B.Com alongside another professional qualification. Write down your challenges.

Next, separate them into two categories: problems you can solve immediately and problems that genuinely require more time. For example, weak accounting knowledge may improve through structured preparation. However, completing an undergraduate degree may require a longer commitment.

Do not delay ACCA simply because someone suggests waiting. Delay only when you have a clear reason and a productive plan.

Candidate Profile

Primary Challenge

2-Year Strategic Focus

Working Professional (Few/No Exemptions)

Limited weekly study hours (~10–15 hours).

Concurrent Progress: Cleanly clear 1–2 papers per quarterly window while logging existing hours toward your PER.

Full-Time Student / Graduate

Lacking corporate exposure and professional networks.

Front-loading Exams + Internships: Clear the Applied Knowledge and Skills papers early to secure a high-quality trainee role by Year 2.

Career Switcher

No foundational accounting background.

Foundational Mastery: Use the first 6 months to master basic bookkeeping concepts via the Applied Knowledge level before taking on complex financial reporting.

Phase 2: Actionable Frameworks for the Next 24 Months

Once you understand your situation, divide your preparation into manageable milestones. Your plan should cover academic knowledge, exam readiness, career development, and practical experience.

However, it must also reflect ACCA's upcoming qualification changes. Synchronize Exams with the 2027 Syllabus Transition: ACCA is introducing a redesigned qualification in 2027.

The final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session-based exams is scheduled for June 2027. The redesigned Expertise and Strategic Professional exams begin in September 2027. It will educate you on how to build a career in International Accounting with ACCA, leading to significant career growth.

Therefore, candidates planning their studies across 2026–2028 must understand how existing passes and exemptions transfer. Use ACCA's official transition guidance before selecting examinations. Importantly, the transition does not mean every student must restart their qualification.

Freeze the Basics

Before attempting advanced topics, strengthen your accounting fundamentals. Focus on double-entry bookkeeping, financial statements, accounting adjustments, business mathematics, and basic financial analysis.

If you are a Class 12 student, concentrate on understanding accounting concepts rather than memorising answers. If you already work in finance, connect these concepts with your daily responsibilities. Strong fundamentals can make later professional studies easier to understand.

The 7-Year Clock

Many students misunderstand ACCA's seven-year rule. Under ACCA's current rules, the seven-year period begins when you pass your first Strategic Professional examination.

You must complete the remaining Strategic Professional examinations within the applicable period. Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills passes do not expire under this rule.

Therefore, a student taking time to strengthen foundational knowledge should not assume that every ACCA examination pass expires after seven years.

Execute a High-Yield Exam Roadmap

If your circumstances allow you to begin ACCA during the next 24 months, use a structured examination plan. The following example uses the existing qualification terminology. From 2027, you must adapt it to the redesigned ACCA structure. You must learn about important finance and accounting exams in October 2026.

Months 1-6 (Applied Knowledge)

Start with the accounting and business fundamentals. Under the existing structure, Applied Knowledge includes Business and Technology, Management Accounting, and Financial Accounting.

Develop a consistent study routine and practise computer-based questions. If you already qualify for exemptions, use this period to strengthen any missing knowledge instead of repeating unnecessary material.

Months 7-18 (Applied Skills)

Move towards more demanding technical subjects. The existing Applied Skills level covers areas such as taxation, financial reporting, audit, financial management, performance management, and business law.

However, avoid attempting every subject simply to meet a fixed deadline. Select papers according to your preparation, examination availability, and ACCA's progression rules. For working professionals, adjust your examination pace during audit season or year-end close.

Months 19-24 (Strategic Professional & EPSM)

This phase should focus on advanced professional learning, ethics, and examination readiness. Under the existing structure, students complete Strategic Professional examinations and the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM). Learn more about the accounting vs finance degree so that it will help you make appropriate decisions.

However, the redesigned qualification introduces different Strategic Professional requirements and an Ethical, Sustainable Leadership Essential Employability Module. Students who complete EPSM before the transition can receive the applicable credit under ACCA's transition arrangements.

If you have not reached the required stage by month 19, continue your remaining examinations rather than rushing into advanced subjects. A realistic timeline matters more than an artificial two-year deadline.

Proactively Build Your Practical Experience Requirements (PER)

Passing examinations alone does not make you an ACCA member. ACCA also requires relevant practical experience, including 36 months of qualifying experience and specified performance objectives.

The good news is that eligible experience gained before, during, or after your examinations may count. Therefore, you can develop professional skills while studying.

Audit Your Job Description

Review your current responsibilities. Do you prepare financial reports, analyse costs, perform reconciliations, support audits, or participate in budgeting?

These activities may contribute towards relevant practical experience, depending on their nature and supervision. If your role offers limited accounting exposure, discuss suitable responsibilities with your manager. It will furthermore help with ACCA and promotions in the future.

Secure an Approved Sign-Off

Your practical experience must receive appropriate verification. Identify a suitable practical experience supervisor early. A qualified accountant who understands your work can review and sign off your performance objectives.

If your line manager is not professionally qualified, ACCA allows certain arrangements involving an additional qualified supervisor. Keep accurate records rather than waiting until the end of your studies. Learn about the benefits of an ACCA-approved employer and how it influences your career choices.

Alternative Pathways to Consider

A two-year plan does not need to focus exclusively on examinations. You can also explore intermediate qualifications, academic pathways, and practical skills. However, always verify whether a particular award remains available. Furthermore, you also learn about career opportunities in Accounting Standards and Policy.

The Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business ACCA's Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business recognises achievement at an intermediate stage of the qualification. Under the existing structure, eligible candidates must complete the required Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills components, together with EPSM.

The redesigned qualification retains an Advanced Diploma pathway, subject to its updated requirements. This can provide a useful milestone before full professional qualification.

The OBU BSc Partnership

The Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting was previously available through ACCA's academic partnership.

However, the programme's completion deadline was May 2026.

Therefore, it is no longer a new degree pathway for students planning their ACCA journey in late 2026 or 2027.

If obtaining a university degree is important, explore currently available undergraduate programmes and other recognised academic pathways. Do not rely on outdated information about the Oxford Brookes partnership.

Wrapping Up!

Hearing that you should wait two years for ACCA may initially feel discouraging. However, waiting does not have to mean standing still. You can strengthen your accounting fundamentals, improve your financial readiness, gain practical experience, and create a realistic professional study plan.

If you are already eligible and prepared, you may not need to postpone ACCA at all. For Class 12 students exploring CA, ACCA, and other commerce qualifications, the lesson is simple: build your career around readiness, not pressure.

At IIC Lakshya, students and working professionals can explore ACCA learning pathways and seek guidance on choosing a preparation schedule suited to their academic and career commitments. Ultimately, the best decision is the one that helps you make meaningful progress towards your long-term goals.
