Most CSEET material online still describes Business Communication as a 50-mark objective paper. If your guide was written for the pre-June 2026 pattern, it is preparing you for an exam ICSI has already withdrawn.
The full form of CSEET is the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test, and the Institute restructured it from the June 2026 session. Business Communication is now Paper 1, carries 100 marks, and runs for three hours as a written paper. You will draft letters and memos by hand, correct sentences, and explain concepts in your own words for an examiner to mark.
This guide sets out what the paper tests under the revised CSEET syllabus, where students lose marks in grammar, and how to practise drafting. A week-by-week study plan follows. For eligibility rules and session dates, our CSEET syllabus and paper pattern guide covers those separately.
Until January 2026, the CSEET exam was a single-day, 200-mark test administered from home under remote proctoring. Every question was multiple choice, and guessing cost nothing.
ICSI has since moved the Entrance Exam for the Company Secretary course into physical examination centres. It runs over four consecutive days, with one paper per day, for a total of 400 marks. Sessions fall in February, June and October.

Papers 1, 2 and 3 are descriptive. Business Laws and Management remains OMR-based, with no negative marking. There is no separate viva voce in the revised pattern; Paper 1 now assesses professional communication directly through written answers.
The passing rule deserves attention. A candidate needs a minimum of 40 marks in every paper and 200 marks in aggregate. Both conditions apply together, so a strong subject cannot rescue one that falls below 40.
Before moving into the detailed topics, it helps to understand what business communication means and why it matters in a professional setting. This foundation makes the rest of the paper easier to follow.
Business communication is the exchange of information inside an organisation, and between that organisation and the world outside it, for a commercial purpose. A circular telling the accounts team that a filing deadline has moved is business communication. So is a letter sent to the Registrar of Companies.
Definitions alone will not carry you through Paper 1. Questions here tend to be applied: you may be handed a badly written message and asked what went wrong, or asked to justify why one mode suited a situation better than another.
Plenty of older notes stop at decoding. Include feedback anyway, because questions on communication barriers often turn on it.
A message succeeds when it is complete, correct, concise, concrete, considerate, courteous and clear. Memorising the list is quick work. The paper asks for something harder: given a long-winded internal email to redraft, your marks sit in the redraft, not in listing the principles.
Students blur these two constantly, and the distinction matters because format expectations differ.

Internal communication moves downward from directors to subordinates, upward from employees to management, and horizontally between colleagues of the same rank. External communication carries more risk, since an ill-judged letter to a regulator becomes part of the record.
English usage occupies a substantial part of this paper. The syllabus covers parts of speech, tenses, voice, articles and punctuation, then extends into vocabulary work: synonyms and antonyms, one-word substitution, homophones, idioms, proverbs and abbreviations. Para jumbles, sentence correction and comprehension with summarising also appear.
Written out like that, the list looks endless. The errors that keep repeating in evaluated mock answer sheets tend to cluster in a few places:
Reading a grammar rule and applying it under time pressure are not the same skill. Thirty voice conversions written by hand teach more than an hour spent rereading the chapter.
Drafting is where the new paper differs most from the old, and where focused practice pays back quickest. Expect to produce a business letter, office memo, circular, formal email, notice or short report.
Your marks depend on both content and format. Content changes with every question; format does not, which makes it the easier half to secure. A business letter needs the sender’s details, date, recipient’s details, subject line, salutation, body, closing and signature block. A memo drops the salutation and formal close, opening with To, From, Date and Subject. A short report wants a title, brief introduction, findings grouped under headings, and a recommendation.
Keep those structures on one page and revise them weekly until you can reproduce them without pausing. Students who do this are less likely to lose easy drafting marks, and their thinking time can go into what the letter actually says.
One limitation is worth stating plainly: ICSI has now released guideline answers for the June 2026 session, but one sitting is not enough to establish a settled question pattern. Prepare against the published syllabus and use the guideline answers to understand the presentation, not to predict the next paper.
Ten to twelve weeks of consistent work suits most candidates. Complete your CSEET registration ahead of the cut-off so the preparation window stays intact.
Give the first three weeks to grammar, one topic at a time, with roughly twenty questions a day. Keep a list of the mistakes you repeat. That list becomes your revision sheet in the final fortnight.
Weeks four to six go to communication theory: the process, barriers, 7 Cs, means of communication, and network patterns such as vertical, circuit, chain, wheel and star. Write short answers from memory rather than simply rereading.
Weeks seven to nine belong to drafting: two documents a day, timed, and given to someone who will mark you honestly on format rather than effort.
The last stretch is for full papers, with one complete three-hour paper each week. Handwriting stamina is a genuine constraint now, and you only discover your limit by writing for the full duration.
Take a CSEET mock test early, before you feel ready. An early poor score tells you where the next ten weeks should go.
Begin with the official ICSI Business Communication study material, hosted free on ICSI website. It is written directly to the syllabus and should remain your main reference; no commercial CSEET book is a substitute for it.
Around it, a standard business communication textbook adds theory depth, a school-level grammar reference provides drill material, and a test series that returns evaluated written answers can be worth the fee now that the paper is descriptive. Your own Business Communication notes still matter more. Notes condensed by hand while studying get revised, whereas a downloaded PDF usually sits untouched.
Where students go wrong with CSEET books is volume. Three of them opened halfway and taught less than one worked through to the end.
The new Paper 1 asks for something the old one never did: the ability to produce professional communication on paper, under time pressure, in your own words. It is harder, though it sits closer to the actual work. The business communication skills you build here will carry into CS Executive and into practice afterwards.
If you are still deciding on the Company Secretary route, the academic counselors at IIC Lakshya run free counselling sessions and help with course planning. Otherwise, pick one grammar topic and draft one business letter this week.
