Every year around the results season, we meet the same graduate. Degree in hand, decent marks, and no clear answer to 'what next?' A B.Com or M.Com is a fine foundation, but on its own, it does not always give you a professional title that companies recognise instantly. That gap is exactly what the company secretary course fills. Qualify as a CS Professional through the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and your general commerce degree becomes the base for a career in corporate law, compliance, and boardroom governance.
Here is something many graduates do not know: starting CS after graduation is actually the shorter route. You skip an entire entrance stage that Class 12 entrants must clear. Still, the doubts are real. What does the CS registration process involve? Is the CS course duration two years or four? And how do you build a CS study plan when college habits are all you have?
Let us take the full graduation-to-CS journey apart, stage by stage, with timelines you can actually plan around.
Anyone joining after Class 12 has to clear the CS Executive Entrance Test, or CSEET, before entering the main course. Graduates do not. ICSI exempts graduates and postgraduates in any discipline from CSEET, allowing them to register directly for the Executive Programme. Final-year or final-semester bachelor’s degree students can also register provisionally.
Skipping CSEET may sound like a small advantage. But it is not. One less examination means one less preparation cycle and often several months saved, although direct-entry candidates must pay the prescribed CSEET exemption fee. A graduate who registers without delay can begin preparing for the Executive-level CS examination straight away instead of first completing the entrance stage.
Commerce graduates carry a second, quieter advantage. Accounting, business law, and economics you have met these subjects before. They keep resurfacing through the Executive Programme and later in the CS Professional Programme, so nothing feels completely foreign on day one.
The rules here are refreshingly short. A degree from a recognised university, in almost any stream, qualifies you for direct entry to the Executive Programme. Final-year students need not wait either; provisional registration allows them to begin while their results are pending. Students looking specifically at CS after B.Com will find that their existing base in accounting, business, and law can be particularly useful.
There is no upper age limit. We have guided 21-year-old freshers and 34-year-old bank employees through the same CS registration window.
Now for the honest bit, because eligibility was never the hard part. The company secretary after graduation asks for two to three years of sustained academic effort, often alongside a job or growing family pressure to “settle down.” The students who last are usually the ones who accept this upfront. Those who drift in casually often begin losing momentum by the second attempt.
Everything happens on the ICSI portal: upload your marksheets, photograph, and identity documents, pay the applicable fee, and complete the required formalities. What trips students up is rarely the form itself; it is the calendar.
Each examination session has a registration cut-off months in advance, and missing it can quietly push your first attempt back. Check the live deadlines on the official ICSI website before making any payment. This detailed guide to the company secretary registration process can also help you understand the documents and steps involved.
The Executive Programme has seven papers across two groups, covering subjects such as company law, taxation, securities regulations, corporate accounting, and business laws. Ten to fourteen months of honest preparation is a sensible budget for graduates planning to attempt both groups.
Working students sometimes take one group per session instead. Slower, yes, but a pass in hand is better than two half-prepared failures. The right choice depends on your available study hours, subject familiarity, and how consistently you can prepare not on how quickly someone else completed the course.
Executive cleared? Register for the final academic stage next.
Under the ICSI fee schedule effective from 15 April 2026, the Professional Programme education and pre-examination test fees total ₹20,000. Examination enrollment is charged separately at ₹1,800 per group. ICSI revises fees periodically, so verify the latest schedule on the official site before paying rather than relying on an older blog or screenshot.
This is the final academic hurdle. Under the 2022 syllabus, the Professional Programme has seven papers split across two groups. Five are compulsory, while two are electives that you choose based on your interests and intended area of specialisation.
Papers run for three hours, and the elective papers follow an open-book examination format. That may sound easier than it is. Open-book papers test whether you can interpret information, locate the right provision, and apply it to a practical case within a limited time, not whether you can copy from the study material.
To pass, you need at least 40 per cent in each paper and 50 per cent in the aggregate for the group or groups attempted, subject to ICSI’s applicable examination rules.
Examinations alone do not make you a company secretary. After clearing the Executive Programme, students must complete the one-month Executive Development Programme 15 days online and 15 days in classroom mode before beginning 21 months of long-term practical training.
This training can run alongside your Professional Programme preparation, which is why planning it early matters. After passing the Professional Programme and completing the prescribed training requirements, students must also complete the Corporate Leadership Development Programme before applying for membership. Once the requirements are cleared and membership is approved, the 'CS' designation is officially yours.
“What is the fastest route?” is probably the question we hear most. Here is what the timeline looks like for a graduate who prepares seriously and clears attempts on schedule.

Where does the CS course duration stretch? Almost always at failed or postponed attempts. Executive and Professional examinations are generally held in June and December, so a missed attempt can cost six months, not six weeks. Prepare as though the first attempt is the only one you get.
The CS professional subjects lean heavily on application. ESG, drafting and appearances, compliance management and audit, strategic management and corporate finance, and corporate restructuring form the compulsory core. Your electives can take you towards banking and insurance law, insolvency, intellectual property, taxation, labour law, artificial intelligence and cyber law, or similar specialisations, depending on where you see your CS career heading.
Build your preparation around the official CS professional study material. Nothing else matches the prescribed syllabus and the examiner’s expectations as closely. Layer previous question papers, bare Acts, supplements, and amendment notes on top. Corporate and regulatory law changes regularly, and answers based on outdated provisions can lose marks quickly. ICSI publishes updated study material and examination-specific supplements, so make checking them part of your preparation routine.
Some habits separate students who qualify from those who keep reappearing:
The classic graduate mistake? Treating this like a university semester. College may reward a heroic final fortnight. The CS examination rarely does. Three steady hours a day for a year will take you further than three frantic months. We have watched both approaches play out for well over a decade.
And when planning attempts on your own feels muddy, speak to a mentor before deciding. IIC Lakshya’s academic team offers counselling and course-planning support for CS aspirants, which many students use simply to settle the group-wise versus combined-attempt question.
Two broad paths open after membership. Employment can take you into listed companies, banks, financial institutions, professional firms, and startups as a compliance officer, governance professional, legal-compliance executive, or in-house company secretary. Independent practice allows you to build a firm around secretarial audits, incorporations, certifications, regulatory filings, and advisory work.
Freshers often begin in the range of ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh a year, although the figure varies considerably by city, employer, role, training exposure, and individual capability. Opportunities can improve faster in listed entities, financial services, and larger corporate environments. Practice income may grow more slowly in the beginning, but it can build steadily as professional credibility and client relationships develop. Treat all salary figures as broad market indicators, not fixed outcomes.
Neither route is automatically better. A corporate role suits students who value structured responsibilities, team exposure, and a regular salary. Independent company secretary practice may suit someone who is comfortable building client relationships and managing the uncertainty that comes with running a professional practice.
Before choosing, understand how each Company Secretary career develops over time. Your first role does not have to be your final destination. Early training, practical exposure, and the quality of work you handle usually matter more than the title printed on your first offer letter.
For a commerce graduate weighing different options, the CS Professional path is among the more time-efficient professional routes available: direct Executive entry, a defined examination ladder, structured training, and a recognisable designation within roughly three to four years.
The roadmap itself is settled. Your outcome rests on registering early, protecting your study hours, and respecting how demanding the CS course after graduation truly is. Begin properly, and the qualification stops being a distant dream. It becomes a schedule you can follow.
