Many women step away from work to raise children, care for a parent or run the home. Coming back is where the doubts start. If you're among the women returning to work after a few years at home, you've probably wondered whether your skills still count, and which course could help you find a job.
We hear these questions in our counselling sessions almost every week. When the woman across the table has a degree (commerce or finance helps, but isn't required), the conversation often turns to CMA USA. It's a global management accounting certification with just two exam papers, and in our experience it can fit around family life more easily than longer professional courses.
Below, we cover eligibility, duration, fees and realistic job options. The full CMA USA course details are also worth a read.
A gap on your CV is far more common than it feels. In the Periodic Labour Force Survey 2025, only 40% of Indian women aged 15 and above were in the labour force, compared with 79.1% of men. Among women outside the workforce, 44.4% gave child care or running the home as the reason.
Plenty of advice on “back to work for women” talks only about confidence. That matters, but practical questions about “getting back to work after career break” also need answers:
Recruiters respond to evidence of recent learning. A recent certificate gives you something concrete to discuss in an interview: what you've learned and how you can apply it.
CMA stands for Certified Management Accountant, a credential awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) in the US. The syllabus shows how businesses use numbers to make decisions, covering budgeting, costing, corporate finance, risk, ethics and data analytics.
Among the courses for women returning to work, the US CMA course stands out for some practical reasons:
The flexibility also appeals to mothers who study during school hours. If you're considering CMA for working professionals, many of the same study options can fit a career restart.
US CMA eligibility involves separate requirements for taking the exams and earning the certification. Under IMA's rules, you can write the exams first and finish the other requirements later.
Take a case we see often. A BCom graduate handled budgets for three years before a six-year break. Her earlier work may already meet the experience requirement under CMA USA course eligibility, subject to IMA's review.
From the September–October 2026 window, case-based questions have replaced essays on English exams in India. Expect calculations and drag-and-drop tasks rather than long written answers.
Plan for about 150 to 200 study hours per part. A full-time learner may finish both parts in six to eight months. If you're juggling school runs and a household, 12 to 18 months is more realistic, and still well within IMA's three-year limit.
Returners usually pay professional rates, as IMA's student discount applies only to current college students.

Many CMAs work in company finance teams, often at multinationals and global capability centres (GCCs). Hybrid working is available in some teams, which can help when you have young children.
Roles you'd typically apply for include:
Some of these companies also run a women's return to work program, often called a returnship, with paid, fixed-term roles for experienced women. A recent certification can strengthen your application to a women back to work program. If you're searching for “women with career break jobs”, check company career pages and LinkedIn for returnship openings.
If you're searching for jobs for housewives returning to work, look beyond data entry listings. A CMA can help you work towards analyst roles with room to grow.
