Reaching CMA Final means you are already close to completing one of the most important stages of the CMA India journey. But there is one decision that many students find confusing:
Which elective should I choose - 20A, 20B, or 20C?
Should you select Business Valuation because you enjoy finance? Should you choose Banking and Insurance because you're interested in risk management? Or would Entrepreneurship suit you because you enjoy business ideas and strategy?
There is no single elective that is automatically the “best” for every student. Your choice should depend on your interests, strengths, learning style, and future career direction. The elective is Paper 20 of CMA Final under Syllabus 2022.
Unlike Papers 13 to 19, where the subjects are fixed, Paper 20 gives students a choice. This is an important decision for working professionals in accounts and finance pursuing CMA India. You select one paper based on your preferred area.
Under the ICMAI Syllabus 2022, CMA Final students choose one of three Paper 20 electives:
Each paper carries 100 marks. ICMAI requires students to select one of the three electives when enrolling for the Final course. Let us compare them simply.
This gives students a chance to develop deeper knowledge in one specialised field. CMA India for commerce freshers is significant in making the choice. The three choices are very different.
So before asking, “Which paper is easiest?” ask a better question:
“Which subject matches the type of problems I enjoy solving?”

Paper 20A combines two major areas:
ICMAI divides the paper equally between these two sections. This makes 20A particularly relevant for students who enjoy understanding both how a business performs and what a business may be worth.
The performance-management section covers areas such as:
The valuation portion includes:
ICMAI gives Business Valuation 50% of the paper, including significant weight for asset/liability valuation and M&A valuation. You should also learn about ICMAI registration to know documentation, dates, and course fees.
20A is generally analytical and finance-focused. You may need to understand concepts, apply valuation methods, and interpret business performance. It can appeal to students who enjoy numbers but also want to understand the strategic meaning behind those numbers.
20A may suit students interested in careers such as:
Again, the elective does not guarantee these roles. It simply gives you subject exposure that can support these career interests. You will benefit from career path, benefits and opportunities with the combination of BCom to CMA India educational and professional growth.
If banking and financial services are areas you may want to explore professionally, 20B provides specialised exposure. Here are the aspects that you need to consider after selecting this paper.
The banking section covers topics such as:
The insurance section covers:
ICMAI gives the banking portion a higher 60% weight.
20B is more risk-oriented and industry-specific. You will study how banks and insurers identify, measure, and manage different types of financial and operational risks. You should be prepared for CMA India in the last 60 days of preparation.
If you enjoy understanding financial institutions, regulations, and risk frameworks, this paper may feel more interesting.
20B may suit students interested in:
Paper 20C takes a very different direction. Instead of focusing mainly on valuation or financial-sector risk, it focuses on building, managing, and scaling businesses. This also helps you prepare for your first CMA India exam day.
ICMAI divides Paper 20C across eight areas, including entrepreneurial skills, startup ecosystems, idea execution, value addition, scaling, risk management, leadership, and new-age businesses.
Major areas include:
The first four sections each carry 15%, while scale-up, risk management, leadership, and new-age business each carry 10%.
20C is more business-oriented, conceptual, and entrepreneurial. You need to think about how businesses are created, how ideas become commercial opportunities, and how organisations grow. This is why global companies prefer US CMA professionals because they bring significant skills and expertise.
ICMAI even provides tutorial sessions connected with founders of unicorn companies as part of its broader Syllabus 2022 workshop resources for this paper.
20C may appeal to students interested in:
In conclusion, if you enjoy finance, valuation, and performance analysis, explore 20A.
If banking, insurance, and financial risk interest you, consider 20B.
Or if you enjoy business ideas, startups, and entrepreneurship, look closely at 20C.
Do not choose your elective only because your friend says one paper is easier. Your interest matters. When you understand the subject, preparation usually becomes more manageable. For Class 12 students exploring CMA India, you do not need to select this paper now.
However, knowing the options helps you understand how specialised the qualification can become at the Final level. For graduates and working professionals already moving towards CMA Final, connect your elective choice with your current role and long-term career direction.
The best elective is not simply the one you can pass. It is the one that gives you useful knowledge for where you want to go next.
No. Students choose one of the three elective papers.
ICMAI states that students select one elective when enrolling for the CMA Final course.
No. Its topics can also be relevant to professionals interested in strategy, consulting, business development, or working with growing companies.
There is no official “easiest” elective. Difficulty depends on your interest, preparation style, and strength in the subject.
20C is specifically designed around entrepreneurship and startups, making it the most directly related option.
