Why 'CS Foundation' No Longer Exists and What Replaced It?

For many years, CS Foundation was the entry-level stage of the Company Secretary course. However, this route is no longer available. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) replaced CS Foundation with the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test (CSEET) in 2020. The entrance test was later restructured from the June 2026 session.

Students planning to pursue Company Secretary studies must understand the current eligibility rules, direct-entry options, examination pattern and registration process. Depending on their qualifications, some students must clear CSEET, while others may register directly for CS Executive.

What Was the CS Foundation Course?

The Company Secretary Foundation Course was the first stage of the older CS route. Students registered after Class 12 and studied for at least eight months before the examination.

The Company Secretary Foundation syllabus under the final scheme had four papers:

Business Environment and Law
Business Management, Ethics and Entrepreneurship
Business Economics
Fundamentals of Accounting and Auditing

Passing these CS Foundation subjects opened the route to CS Executive. Graduates and postgraduates could enter Executive directly. Foundation was a full academic stage, not merely an entrance test.

Why Was the CS Foundation Exam Stopped?

The Company Secretaries (Amendment) Regulations, 2020 took effect on 3 February 2020. From that date, fresh CS Foundation registration stopped and CSEET became the qualifying test for entry to CS Executive.

ICSI said the entrance test would assess the aptitude and skills needed for Company Secretary studies. Instead of a separate Foundation programme, ICSI placed an eligibility check before Executive registration.

Students who had registered under the old system received transition opportunities until their registration expired. Those opportunities have ended. Therefore, no current applicant can submit a new CS Foundation registration or appear for a CS Foundation exam.

CSEET Replaced CS Foundation

CSEET means Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test. It is the current Company Secretary entrance exam for eligible students seeking admission to CS Executive.

The replacement was not a simple name change. The two routes serve different purposes:

A CSEET result remains valid for one year. Qualifying students should register for Executive within that period. Restructured CSEET registration remains valid for three years from the month of registration.

Who Must Take CSEET?

An Indian national who has passed or is appearing in the Senior Secondary, or 10+2, examination can register for CSEET. This makes it the standard entry route for most school students.

Some candidates can register directly for CS Executive. The ICSI restructuring announcement lists these main exempt categories:

Candidates who passed the former ICSI Foundation examination
Graduates and postgraduates
Students appearing in the final year or final semester of a bachelor’s degree
Candidates who passed the Final examination of ICAI or ICMAI

ICSI may revise categories, documents and fees, so check the live instructions before paying. Graduates can also review CS Executive registration after graduation.

What Changed in the 2026 CSEET Exam?

The restructured CSEET began in June 2026. The remote-proctored format ended in January 2026. The current test runs at designated centres in February, June and October.

It carries 400 marks across four papers scheduled on separate exam days:

ICSI provides 15 minutes of reading time for each paper. The OMR-based Business Laws and Management paper has no negative marking.

Candidates need 40% in each paper and 50% overall in one sitting. Marks cannot be carried forward, so ignoring a weaker subject can cost the entire attempt.

What Does the CSEET Syllabus Cover?

The official restructured CSEET syllabus builds the base needed for Executive studies.

Business Communication

It covers grammar, vocabulary, reading, business correspondence and drafting. Students must practise clear written answers.

Fundamentals of Accounting

Topics include accounting principles, journal entries, ledgers, trial balance and financial statements. Non-commerce students often need more preparation time.

Economic and Business Environment

It connects microeconomics, macroeconomics, the Indian economy and factors affecting businesses. Understanding beats memorising definitions.

Business Laws and Management

It combines legal principles, business organisations and management concepts. The OMR format still demands careful reading.

Some topics overlap with the old CS Foundation syllabus, but that does not make old books safe. The coverage and answer format have changed.

CSEET Registration, Fees and Deadlines

Students register through the ICSI CSEET portal. Registration and examination enrollment are separate steps. Paying the registration fee alone does not automatically place a candidate in the next examination session.

The stated registration fee is ₹7,500, including the Student Induction Programme and online classes. A separate examination fee of ₹1,500 applies per session. Concessions exist for specified categories. Verify current fees before payment.

Class 12 students should not wait for results if current rules allow registration. Track registration, exam enrolment, documents and mock tests on one calendar.

Benefits and Limits of the New Route

The pattern introduces accounting, drafting, economics, law and management before Executive. Subjective papers also build answer-writing practice early.

The limits are practical. Centres may require travel, while three written papers demand presentation and time management. Students must clear all papers in one sitting.

Students should therefore treat CSEET as a serious professional entrance exam, not a quick multiple-choice formality.

Common Preparation Mistakes

Mentors regularly see avoidable mistakes:

Buying books labelled CS Foundation Programme without checking the applicable year
Preparing only objective questions for a mainly subjective exam
Ignoring accounting because it looked easy in school
Forgetting the separate examination-enrolment step
Waiting until the final month to practise full answers

What Comes After CSEET?

Company Secretaries work in compliance, governance, board processes, regulatory filings and advisory roles. Pay varies by location, employer, training exposure and skills. Do not choose CS only for an advertised salary figure.

What This Means for Your CS Plan?

CS Foundation is now an old route, not the first step for a new student. CSEET replaced it and, from June 2026, became a centre-based four-paper examination with three subjective papers. Your correct route depends on whether you are entering after Class 12 or qualify for direct entry.
