Plenty of CPA candidates who do not pass a section have put in the study hours. The trouble sometimes shows up on test day, when the exam feels nothing like the questions they practised at home. A random PDF of MCQs or a question bank with no simulations can make you feel ready right up to the first testlet.
That is why the quality of your CPA practice questions matters as much as the hours you study. A good mock-test programme mirrors the real Uniform CPA Examination in format, timing and difficulty, then gives you useful feedback. A weak one hands you a score and nothing else.
This guide is for commerce graduates, final-year BCom and MCom students, and working professionals with one to five years of experience who plan to take the US CPA. It covers how the exam is built, the features worth checking before you pay for a CPA mock test, the red flags to avoid and how to practise well. If you are still checking eligibility, start with our US CPA course guide.
You can only judge a CPA practice test if you know what it is supposed to reflect. Under the CPA Evolution model, every candidate passes three Core sections and one Discipline section of their choice.
The question mix under the AICPA's 2027 Blueprints looks like this:

Simulations carry at least 40% of the score in every section, so a programme built mostly on MCQs leaves a substantial part of your preparation uncovered.
Reading notes builds knowledge. Practice helps you apply that knowledge under pressure. Good CPA exam practice questions prepare you for four realities of the exam:
A working professional may score above 80% on chapter quizzes and still run out of time in a full sitting. Short quizzes test what you know. Full mocks test whether you can apply it consistently for four hours.
The mock should feel like the Prometric screen you will see on exam day. Check for:
The AICPA revises its blueprints regularly, and the versions applicable to 2027 took effect in January 2026. Before you enrol, ask when the question bank was last updated. Good providers tag each question by blueprint area and skill level, such as Application or Analysis. For REG and TCP, the tax questions should reflect federal tax law eligible for testing on your exam date.
Many providers advertise thousands of questions. Ask a more useful question: how many simulations are there per section? Look for variety, including:
The exam no longer includes a searchable authoritative literature library. Practice should help you interpret and apply the excerpts provided within a task.
A score without an explanation teaches you very little. Each answer should explain why the correct option works, why the others are incorrect and, where relevant, which standard or code section applies. For simulations, step-by-step solutions or short video walkthroughs can help you follow the reasoning.
Useful reports show your accuracy by content area and skill level, along with time spent per question. They should also track your progress across mocks. Treat any “readiness score” as an estimate, not a promise.
Analytics tell you where you went wrong. A mentor helps you understand why. For working professionals, doubt support at flexible hours in IST can make a practical difference.
The AICPA offers a free CPA Exam sample test containing questions from all six sections. It uses the software you will encounter in the real exam, so it helps you learn the interface early and revisit unfamiliar tools close to your exam date. It is shorter than a full section and does not assess exam readiness, so it cannot replace full-length mocks.
You will also find plenty of CPA exam sample questions PDF files online. They can work for quick revision, but they fall short as a mock test:

A quick word on CPA exam papers. The AICPA does not publish actual past papers, because exam content stays confidential. It has released retired task-based simulations to show the format. Anyone selling real” or leaked papers is a red flag, and using such material can breach the confidentiality terms every candidate accepts.
Walk away, or at least ask clear questions, if a programme shows any of these signs:
Even the best programme needs a thoughtful practice routine. This sequence gives you time to identify gaps, work on them and test your progress:
One common mistake is repeating the same question bank until the answers feel familiar. Scores rise, but mostly through memory. Fresh CPA exam questions give a truer picture of where you stand.
Keep your expectations realistic too. A mock score in the high 70s does not guarantee a pass, and a 68 does not mean you will fail. Watch the trend across several mocks rather than any single result.
For many Indian candidates, the mock programme comes bundled with a CPA exam preparation course. So judge the full package, not just the question count. Check these points before you sign up:
Before enrolling anywhere, including with IIC Lakshya, ask to try a demo test. Discuss planning your CPA study schedule with a mentor so you can fit mocks and time to review them into a working week.
The best CPA practice questions do more than test you. They mirror the real exam, explain every answer and show you what to work on next. Before you choose a programme, check four things: simulations, blueprint alignment, analytics and mentor support.
If you are unsure which section to start with or which programme suits your schedule, book a free counselling session with the IIC Lakshya academic team. A short conversation can help you make a more informed choice before committing your time and money.
