CS for Commerce Freshers After 12th - A Step-by-Step Roadmap for School Leavers

Last Updated On -31 Aug 2026

Class 12 commerce student planning the Company Secretary Course stages with a mentor

Your Class 12 results are out, B.Com admissions have opened, and someone in the family has already told you that a degree on its own won’t take you far. That advice is usually right, and it’s why so many commerce students start looking at the Company Secretary Course before they have even picked a college. CS After 12th is one of the few professional routes in India you can begin at seventeen or eighteen, without waiting for a graduation certificate in hand.

What students rarely get, however, is a straight answer about the next four years. They hear 'three levels and some training' and stop there. So this article walks you through the full path to becoming a Company Secretary: the entrance test, the two programmes that follow, the subjects, the fees, the training stage that catches people off guard, and the work a qualified Company Secretary actually does. Read it as something you can build a timetable around.

What a Company Secretary Actually Does?

Start with the confusion, because it costs students time. A Company Secretary isn’t an administrative assistant. The role is the compliance and governance backbone of a company the person who keeps board meetings legally valid, files with the Registrar of Companies on time, drafts resolutions and minutes, and tells the board when a plan breaks a rule.

The law makes the role compulsory for prescribed classes of companies, and that’s the part worth your attention. Under Section 203 of the Companies Act, 2013, read with Rules 8 and 8A, listed companies and other public or private companies with paid-up share capital of ₹10 crore or more must appoint a whole-time Company Secretary. Section 204 goes further: listed companies and specified classes of larger companies need a secretarial audit, and only a Company Secretary in practice can conduct it. Demand for this qualification doesn’t rest solely on market sentiment. It is backed by statute.

CS Foundation Is Now CSEET: What Changed?

If a senior handed you notes labelled CS Foundation, set them aside. ICSI discontinued the Foundation Programme in 2020 and replaced it with CSEET, the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test. Anyone still searching for CS Foundation Registration is really looking for CSEET registration, and the two exams aren’t the same.

Eligibility is broad. You can register while you are still appearing for Class 12, and your stream does not matter, though commerce students may find some of the accounting, economics and business topics familiar. Under the restructured CSEET effective from June 2026, ICSI conducts the test three times a year, in February, June and October, at designated examination centres.

The test has four papers: Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, Economic and Business Environment, and Business Laws and Management. The first three are three-hour subjective papers, while the fourth is a two-hour OMR-based paper. You need 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate, all in the same sitting. ICSI has revised the paper pattern more than once since 2020, so download the current syllabus and check the latest registration dates rather than trusting a PDF that has been passed around for two years.

Executive Programme: where the law begins

This is where the Company Secretary Syllabus turns serious. Seven papers split across two groups take you through jurisprudence and general laws, company law and practice, setting up of business along with industrial and labour laws, corporate accounting and financial management, capital market and securities laws, economic, commercial and intellectual property laws, and tax laws. Registration cut-offs depend on whether you plan to attempt one group or both, and they fall several months before the examination. The exams are held in June and December.

School leavers always ask whether to attempt both groups together. Counsellors usually suggest one group first if you are also settling into a degree, and both together only if your board preparation proved you can carry a heavy syllabus without falling behind.

Professional Programme and the training nobody plans for

The Professional Programme shifts from rules to judgment governance and ESG, drafting and pleadings, compliance management and due diligence, corporate restructuring, valuation and insolvency, strategic management and corporate finance, and two electives chosen from the prescribed lists. Paper names can change when ICSI revises the syllabus, so confirm the current ICSI syllabus before you buy books.

The 21-month practical training is the stage students underestimate most. It begins once you clear the Executive Programme and complete the required one-month Executive Development Programme. This means it can run alongside your Professional studies if you plan it properly. Wait until you have passed everything before starting, and you have added close to two years to your timeline for no good reason.

Company Secretary Course Fee and Time

CS remains one of the more affordable professional qualifications in India, which matters when a family is funding a degree at the same time. Under the ICSI fee schedule effective from April 2026, budget ₹7,500 for CSEET registration and ₹1,500 for the examination. The Executive Programme costs ₹18,900 for students entering through CSEET, while the Professional Programme costs ₹20,000. Examination fees are ₹1,500 per Executive group and ₹1,800 per Professional group.

If you clear every stage on the first attempt, these core registration and examination charges total approximately ₹54,500. Your actual Company Secretary Course Fee will be higher once you include EDP, training-related requirements, membership charges, optional services or repeat attempts. Fee concessions apply to specified categories, including SC/ST candidates and persons with disabilities.

ICSI revises these figures periodically, so treat them as a planning guide and confirm the current fee schedule on the institute’s website before you pay. Coaching sits outside this, and it is usually the bigger number.

Clear every stage on the first attempt, and membership can arrive in about three and a half to four years. Most students take four to five. Plan for the longer version.

Should You Pair CS With a Degree?

Technically, no degree is required for ICSI membership. Practically, do the degree anyway.

A B.Com or BBA running in parallel gives you a fallback if you decide this path isn’t yours, eligibility for government and PSU roles that ask for graduation regardless of professional qualifications, and room to add ACCA or CMA later. Corporate accounting and tax in the Executive syllabus also repeat a fair amount of second-year B.Com material.

Choose the college with your CS calendar in mind. Lighter attendance demands free up study hours, while monthly internal projects will compete with your June preparation. Students who ignore this usually drop one of the two by the second year.

Where Students Lose a Year or Two?

Four patterns keep repeating in counselling conversations.

The first is treating CSEET as easy because it is the entrance stage. Under the restructured pattern, three papers are subjective. Students who prepare only from old objective-question banks can walk in confident and still finish below the 40% mark in one paper.

The second is registering for the Executive Programme in a hurry, then opening the books three months before the exam. The gap between registration and examination gives you a preparation window. Use it properly.

The third is underrating writing. Secretarial work is drafting notices, minutes, resolutions and board notes and the Professional Programme examines it directly. If long written answers in English drain you, it is better to recognise that now than in your third year.

The fourth is picking a training place purely on stipend. Twenty-one months inside a listed company’s secretarial team, or with a busy practising CS, teaches you filings, board processes and SEBI compliance that no textbook can cover. Extra money for routine paperwork is a poor trade this early.

Company Secretary Career Options and Salary

A Company Secretary Career branches early, and school leavers should understand both paths before they commit.

In employment, you join the secretarial or compliance function of an organisation listed companies, banks, NBFCs, insurers, and increasingly startups raising institutional money and dealing with ROC, FEMA and SEBI paperwork for the first time. In practice, you take a certificate of practice and work for multiple clients, signing secretarial audits, annual return certifications, and due diligence reports.

Be careful with the salary numbers floating around online. Fresh ACS members in Indian metros commonly start somewhere in the ₹4–7 lakh range, with company size, city and listed-entity exposure pushing that figure either way. Trainees earn a stipend well below it. Pay climbs for those who handle listed-company compliance well, and ICSI’s campus placement records show a wide band rather than one number. Anyone promising a guaranteed package is selling you something.

If you cannot yet tell whether employment or practice suits you, a conversation with a counsellor who has followed ICSI results for several years beats a week of forum reading. IIC Lakshya offers free career counselling for students at exactly this point.

What to Do in the Next Three Months?

Pick your CSEET session first, working backwards from your board results. Register on the ICSI portal, download the current syllabus, and check the separate examination-enrolment deadline. Give Business Laws and Management, along with answer-writing practice for the three subjective papers, more attention than the topics you already enjoy. Decide on your degree in the same month, not six months later, so the two calendars do not collide.

The Company Secretary Course rewards students who start early and stay steady far more than it rewards brilliance. Four years is a serious commitment at eighteen. It is also shorter than the route many of your classmates will take to reach a qualification carrying this much legal weight.
