CMA USA Exams vs Full Certification: The Milestone Most Students Miss

Last Updated On -01 Oct 2026

By Sajith R S

Commerce graduate reviewing CMA USA certification requirements after clearing both parts of the CMA USA exam

Passing both parts of the CMA USA exam is an important step, but it does not automatically make you a certified CMA. To earn the CMA USA Certification, you must also meet IMA’s education and work experience requirements. Knowing the difference early helps you plan what comes after the exams.

This guide explains what the exam gives you, what full US CMA certification requires, which jobs count as experience, the deadlines to track and the costs involved. If you are still exploring the qualification, start with the CMA USA course details.

CMA USA Exam vs CMA USA Certification: What's Different?

Think of the exam as one item on a longer checklist. Certification is the point where IMA confirms you have completed the whole list.

Until IMA certifies you, write 'Cleared US CMA Part 1 and Part 2' on your CV. Recruiters respect honest wording, and it avoids awkward moments during background checks.

The Four Requirements for US CMA Certification

To hold the full US CMA certification, you must complete all four:

  • IMA membership and entrance fee: You join IMA and enrol in the CMA programme before booking an exam.
  • Both parts of the CMA US exam: Part 1 covers Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics. Part 2 covers Strategic Financial Management.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, or an IMA-approved professional qualification.
  • Work experience: Two continuous years in management accounting or financial management.

Here is what surprises most students. You don’t need the degree or the experience before you write the exam. IMA allows you to submit your education and work experience before or after passing, but both remain requirements for certification.

What the CMA US Exam Looks Like in 2026

The format changed this year, but the syllabus did not. Here is what you face today:

  • Two separate parts, which you can take in any order.
  • Four hours per part, split into three hours for MCQs and one hour for the second section.
  • Case-based questions (CBQs) replaced essays from the September–October 2026 window for English exams across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa.
  • Each CBQ gives a business case of roughly 250 words, followed by linked tasks such as drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank and calculations.
  • You still need to score at least 50% on the 100 MCQs to reach the CBQ section.
  • The passing score is 360 on a scaled range of 0 to 500.
  • Testing windows run in January–February, May–June and September–October.
  • Your one-time entrance fee gives you three years to pass both parts.

US CMA Work Experience Requirements

This is the milestone most students miss. The rule looks simple on paper, but the details catch people out.

  • You need two continuous years of professional experience.
  • Part-time roles of 20 hours a week count at the rate of one year of experience for every two years worked.
  • You can complete it before the exam or within seven years after passing.
  • The role must regularly involve judgement using management accounting and financial management principles.
  • Experience earned in any country counts, including India and the UAE.

CMA Work Experience Examples That Usually Count

IMA looks at what you actually do, not your job title. These roles generally qualify:

  • Financial planning and analysis, budgeting and forecasting
  • Cost accounting and costing analysis
  • Preparing financial statements and handling month-end or year-end close
  • Internal or external audit
  • Treasury, risk evaluation and investment decisions
  • Management consulting linked to finance
  • Teaching accounting or finance above the introductory level, when it forms most of your workload

Roles That Usually Don't Count

  • Internships, trainee, clerical or non-technical positions
  • Sales, marketing, engineering, personnel or general management roles that use management accounting only occasionally

One student we guided spent her first year at a Kochi shared services centre, mostly posting invoices. That work was largely transactional. Once she moved into reporting and variance analysis, her CMA US work experience became far easier to justify.

CA articleship raises a similar question. It is a training arrangement, and IMA excludes trainee roles. Confirm with IMA directly before you count it.

CMA Education Requirements and the Seven-Year Clock

The CMA education requirements are flexible compared with many qualifications:

  • IMA accepts degrees in any field, earned before or within seven years of passing the exam.
  • Certain professional qualifications on IMA’s approved list can replace the degree.

Keep two clocks in mind:

  • Three-year exam window: Starts when you pay the entrance fee.
  • Seven-year completion window: Gives you time to meet the education and experience requirements after passing. Check the deadline that applies to you with IMA.

Miss the seven-year deadline, and you risk losing credit for your exam passes. That could mean writing both parts again.

How to Get CMA Certification After the Exams?

If you are wondering how to become CMA certified, follow the process from registration through to IMA approval:

  1. Join IMA and pay the CMA entrance fee.
  2. Register for a part and book your Prometric slot.
  3. Pass both parts within the three-year window.
  4. Submit your degree certificate or transcripts through your IMA account.
  5. Submit the experience verification form with a job description signed by your employer.
  6. Wait for IMA’s review, then receive your CMA USA certificate.
  7. Keep it active with 30 CPE hours each year, including two hours of ethics.

A practical tip from our mentors: collect a signed role description before you leave any job. Chasing a former HR team three years later is slow and stressful.

CMA USA Exam Fees and Certification Costs

Most students budget for the US CMA exam fees and forget the costs that continue after. Here is a simple view based on published 2026 rates:

Fee component

Student member

Professional member

IMA membership (yearly)

$49

$295 + $15 one-time

CMA entrance fee (one-time)

$225

$300

Exam fee (per part)

$407

$545

A few points to remember:

  • Every retake needs a fresh exam registration and fee, though not a new entrance fee.
  • Student rates need active enrolment of at least six credit hours at a college or university.
  • Certified CMAs pay a $30 annual renewal fee on top of membership.
  • Fees change from time to time, and banks add forex charges. Check the IMA store before paying.

Common Mistakes Between Results and Certification

Our counsellors at IIC Lakshya see the same errors every year:

  • Adding CMA to a CV or LinkedIn profile before IMA certifies you
  • Assuming internships or articleship will count as experience
  • Taking a non-finance job after results and losing valuable months
  • Leaving a company without a signed job description
  • Paying the entrance fee early, then letting the three-year window run out
  • Treating CPE as optional once the certificate arrives

Does Full Certification Change Your Career?

Yes, but not overnight. Clearing both parts can help you get shortlisted for entry-level finance roles. Full certification carries more weight at the next step, such as promotions, team-lead roles and Gulf openings where employers verify credentials.

Common roles include:

  • FP&A analyst
  • Cost analyst or management accountant
  • Business finance partner
  • Finance controller, over time

Salary grows with your role, city and years of experience. No course can promise a fixed package, and anyone who does should raise a red flag.

There are drawbacks too. Fees are in dollars, the experience requirement takes two years and CPE continues every year. For most finance professionals, these trade-offs are manageable when planned early.
